A hotel with deceptive advertising and unfriendly

the hotel advertised many features for the room on, many of which were not available such as bathtub, alarm clock and sitting area, just to name a few. When I mentioned this, the immediate response was " If you don't like it, go find another place." I was then given excuses that the agoda posting had to be updated, the rooms have been upgraded, etc. the manager was very unfriendly and also made sweeping negative comments about me after he insisted on knowing what country I was from. He was judging me based on my nationality. He was a very angry man who instead of accepting responsibility, blamed me when I had the nerve to complain about the lies posted on agoda. My room was also very dirty and there was mold on the walls.

Winter is coming !!

Do not be fooled by the modest entrance of the building – this hotel is like warm and comfortable home.
The Hanoi Winter Hostel has the best service you can have in a hostel. Do not be fooled by the modest entrance of the building – this hotel is like warm and comfortable home. The Dorm room Only 3 Bed is big with all the comfort you need, including Wfi in room The location is great, behind the Dong Xuan Maket. Few steps to bars and restaurants and less than 5 minutes walking distance from Kiem Lake. The breakfast is a la carte, but you can order and repeat whatever you want But the best of the hostel is the staff. We were not guest anymore when we returned from Halong Bay to pick up our train ticket - purchased with manager help. We were greeted with welcome drinks coffee and tea ,banana they offered a room for a quick shower with no charge. And if that was not good engouh : an employee take us to the train station to show us our platform . All this without any cost!

“Very good for the price”

It's walking distance to shops, eateries, the night market and the big day market. And the air con worked great. I'd recommend it whole heartedly and stay there again with no qualms.
When the taxi driver stopped in the middle of the road and said "You walk!" and pointed down an alley full of scooters and shops, I was more than a little nervous. However, in a moment Dong (the manager) was there, smiling and lifting our bags. We went down the tiny street to find a clean, welcoming hostel. The boys (they seemed so young to me!) who run this place are sweet, helpful, always offering coffee or fruit. They checked us in, gave us a lovely room - high ceilings, large wetroom toilet/shower combo, comfy bed and never ceased smiling and offering helpful advice. Some of the other reviews are right - the coffee was AMAZING. We loved it and drank it by the gallon there. As for 760Peps bad experience with Halong Bay - we were happy with ours - loved the boat and the trip. Run by a young family whose rates for tours aren't overblown in comparison to other venues/tour guides and I recommend the Monkey Island Cruise - 2 night tour for Halong Bay. It's walking distance to shops, eateries, the night market and the big day market. And the air con worked great. We came to see WinterHostel as our quiet oasis in the craziness of Hanoi. As we left, one of the other boys - Hai - presented us with a bag of candy from the small alter to Buddha they have, ensuring us since it had been offered to Buddha it was good luck. They were all great guys and I'd recommend it whole heartedly and stay there again with no qualms.

I don’t understand the high rating this hotel gets

Central location
We only needed a place to sleep and take shower for one night in Hanoi as we were to depart for Halong Bay the next day. So needed a centrally located, cheap but decent place to stay the night. After reading hundreds of reviews for hotels under $20 in Hanoi (traveler reviews are addictive – I can’t stop myself but compare hotels) I decided to book this one relying on the high ratings on the hotel in the price range I was looking. What a shame on all the time I spent reading those reviews. This hotel is by far the worst place I have ever stayed in my life. Where – in Hanoi old quarter, very narrow street, no car entry, yet perhaps the noisiest place on earth. 4th floor. Why - here we go: Very low ceilings (I mean really low like 1.80cm height – luckily we both are just under 1.75cm). I felt like I was in the Being John Malcovic movie Very strong musty smell, enormous dampness and molds on the walls- Please see pictures Ensuite bathroom (luxury!!!) has higher ceilings, yet the 2/5th of the walls are neither tiled nor painted. Did I say damp? Sink has no proper piping connecting, all we had was a hose connected to the sink moving the water from under the sink to 1 meter away from the sink on the same floor. Rotten fruit placed in front of the window (or should I say prison bars) – fruit flies everywhere Exposed piping – cracked walls – not like the trendy industrial looking ones Dust and dust and dust everywhere, stained linens Noisy minibar – well we were brave enough to plug the fridge to the unsafe looking outlet No lift, no baggage carrying service – no issue for us, but maybe an issue for some people Horrific taste of decoration – if you are keen to see something eclectic you may have a different opinion. Interesting hotel management – keen to sell tours in the morning – as if they did not know that they have placed us in the worst room in their hotel and all we wanted is to run away from this place as fast as possible.

“Amazing staff & clean rooms!”

I must say that this hostel is really worth it
I liked everything about the hostel:” All staff, location, service, breakfast, rooms… It is a great choice in Hanoi. All the hostel staff are very friendly and are always at your service 24/7. The location of the hotel is very very close to Hoan kiem lake 5 mins walk. Everything is easily accessible from the hotel. I must say that this hostel is really worth it. I would definitely stay here again.

Not only Hostel but second home in Hanoi also. Hanoi Winter Hostel staff were helpful and friendly. They made us felt like home. Especially Mrs Hoa ,... They had done a good arrangement for my trip to Halong bay. Breakfast was delicious, rooms were clean and spacious. Highly recommended.

"Great for solo traveller."

You can have your free breakfast here any time you get up, even you're late. And it's a very good breakfast.
For $4 a night my expectations were pretty low, but I was greeted by friendly and helpful staff, and the location was good too! The room was basic, but had everything you need.Mr Dong who runs the guest house was fabulous. Always willing to help and showed us things to see and do and organised our Ha Long Bay 2 day 1 night ( ALOHA CRUISE) and bus to Ninh Binh . Breakfast was nice and the room was spacious and clean. Would definitely recommend to anyone who asked about places to stay in Hanoi.
