One of black culture's most important NYC landmarks, the YMCA Harlem offers affordable accommodation with good transport links to midtown Manhattan. Opened in 1933, the YMCA Claude McKay Residence is friendly both to families and to budgets, providing clean, private rooms of varying occupancy and a full gymnasium, with heated swimming pool, weights and aerobic center. There's a metro station and bus stop nearby providing quick links downtown, while a diverse array of restaurants and bars can be found in this rapidly gentrified neighborhood. Within walking distance guests will find the Apollo Theater, the shops and brownstones of 125th Street, not to mention the Malcolm Shabazz Market (Malcolm X was, incidentally, once a guest of this YMCA). see more

Stay somewhere else

near metro, cheap, has gym
I didn't like staying here. It was December and the rooms were not that warm, although it was apparent that they turned on the heat in the lobby to keep the staff comfortable. Also, the place is quite old and dirty; it felt like staying in the homeless shelters I used to volunteer in. Bathrooms were so-so; they were cleaned once a day. Often the toilet paper would run out in the evening. Overall this is not a comfortable place, and after a long day of site-seeing, it will not help you relax and rest. You're supposed to show your key to the staff every time you walk in the building, which is weird. They also neglected to explain this to me when I checked-in, and only after a few times in which the desk staff were kind of rude to me did I figure out that this is what they wanted. Perhaps they're tired of explaining it, perhaps it's a stupid rule, perhaps they really don't care enough? I don't know. Also, the area is pretty awful. There are few decent food options, and walking around at night feels dangerous. A street-walker even came into the restaurant I was having dinner at just to ask me for money while I was eating, then shouted profanities at me when I refused -- this is what Harlem is like. I really, really don't recommend staying here or in Harlem in general, if you have a choice. Even if it's cheap, just stay somewhere else and enjoy the nicer parts of the city.

it was OK

access to public transport, clean, cheap
my stay at Harlem YMCA was OK, there is nothing exceptional nor something you want to complain about. Though it was easy to access the subway, it is a little bit far from the city centre. I would rather choose YMCA Vanderbilt and pay extra.

Affordable and more than efficient!

The staff was INCREDIBLE! Everyone was amazingly nice and caring! The location was great! Literally less than a block to the subway. PRICE! NYC rates are crazy, YMCA made my trip possible!
I had a fabulous experience! And I will definitely come back and recommend this place to anyone going to NYC on a budget. Unlike a different review, first thing: nothing was stolen. I only had wonderful experiences here. Seriously, the staff was incredible. You could just tell everyone loved their job and was here to help. The room was small, very small, and the bed was what you'd find at a summer camp from grade school (thin mattress, single beds, kinda lumpy, cheap pillows). BUT the blanket was great and fluffy! And the room was always very clean and my bed was made every night when I came home! And the bathrooms were almost always available when I wanted to use one. There was one time in my 5 day stay where I had to go to a different floor to use the restroom, but that was no big deal. It took forever for the water to heat up, but once I figured that out, it was no problem either. I really can't say enough about how fabulous my experience was. I loved it.
