Good location but inconsistent room type and servi

Good location. Free wifi.

Had three separate bookings during our recent trip to NY so experienced varying degrees of room sizes even though they were categorised under the same room type. The biggest room we got was for our first booking so we were pleasantly surprised after reading reviews talking about the small rooms. But the last room we got was really small and there was hardly any room left to walk after opening up our luggage. As for service the check in staff we encountered can be quite gruff but generally we experienced good service. They also have this ridiculous policy of not allowing us to stow our luggage overnight even though we had a confirmed booking the next day as we were going for 2-day Niagara Falls trip. We even offered to pay but the woman at the counter quoted their policy & refused to bend. They really need to review this ridiculous policy for tourists who are going out of town for a couple of days but coming back with a confirmed room booking. Pros: Good location to explore NYC from as they are just a few streets away from the main interchange PENN station which contains all the subway and Amtrak lines so you can basically take any line and still be able to go back to hotel at night after a whole day of exploring NYC. Free wifi but troublesome need to login every time after you leave the wifi coverage. Cons: No in-room kettle or coffee but they have free coffee machine in the lobby. No fridge to store your yogurt or fruit. Really small rooms. Try to ask for bigger rooms if possible (But we didn't).

Some negatives: Air con noisy, staff snobby room was slightly musty. However the room was decent size, can't go past location. It is a budget motel so as long as you are willing to overlook a few things and do not have high expectations. We will consider staying again.

Great centrally located hotel

Herald Square Hotel was wonderful, the room was clean and the beds were very comfortable. The location is also fantastic, we were able to walk to most places of interest, and the subway was located very close by. The free wi-fi was pretty stable, our only complaint would be that once or twice the hot water ran out really quickly but otherwise, it was great.

The hotel is very accessible, situated close to Macy's. Beautiful old building. Rooms are ok, our room was 116. The room was clean in general, although not too much around the corners. The hotel uses casings for mattresses and box springs, which is a very good precaution against the NYC bed bugs. We did not encounter any of these little pests, and the room did not have any of the telltale signs of earlier infestation either. Just mentioning this as I was very careful after the hotel came up in a google search for that - which imho is unjustified, as the latest reported incident was in 2006. The room and especially the private bath room were splendid. Minor complaint is that the room service starts their cleaning round early and makes a lot of noise.
