Basic hotel, near Merdeka Square and Chinatown

Good value, clean, good accessibility

Very good stay. Basic room which was clean and tidy. Very good location as within walking distance to Merdeka Square (I was there for Stanchart KL Marathon). Also location was very near Chinatown (5-10 min) walking distance, with buses that run into the city/ shopping area. Only downside was the weekend that I stayed for the Marathon also happened to coincide with some street music festival so the outside was very noisy on the night before the marathon; the music jamming was till 11pm!

Hotel A-One is located at a pedestrain mall which means a short walk if arriving by taxi. It's about 5 minutes walk to the Masjid Jamek train station. Chinatown and the Pasar Seni station is a few minutes further in the opposite direction. The pedestrain mall seems to be a popular hangout for workers from overseas, especially on weekends. Some guests may feel uneasy about this when returning to the hotel late at night. There was a nightly open air concert at the pedestrain mall when I was staying there. When I was checking in, I mentioned my concern of possible noise from the concert to the receptionist and she immediately re-assigned me to another room, assuring me that I would not hear the concert at all. She was right. She also offered me a map of Kuala Lumpur without my asking. Top marks to her. The room I had was very small but very clean. It's similar to the rooms in the pidgeon hole hotels in Hong Kong - minimalist in furnishings and floor area. There was a LED tv which had the local channels and HBO, CNN and a Foxsports channel. Picture quality was not good but watchable. Wifi was fast. I've always asked for a smoking room whenever I make a booking. Sometimes I would find an ashtray in the room. I guess there's very little the hotels can do if guests flout the rule. But Hotel A-One is serious about this: there's a smoke detector installed in the room. A not-so-prominent sign at the reception desk warns that if the smoke detector in the room is activated by cigarette smoke, the guest will have to pay RM100 for the additional cleaning-up. And should the alarm trigger a response by the fire department, the cost will be RM300. An important thing to note is that the room door does not lock by itself when you close it. It is necessary to press the button on inside door latch before closing the door in order to lock it. Remember to do this upon entering the room or leaving it.

Overall, the stay was pleasing. The room was very small. Small in the sense after the bed, there was literally just 1 foot walking space around it. Also, the room TV was very small. But since one doesn't spend much time in the hotel, these didn't affect our trip much. The LRT (metro) station named 'Masjid Jamek' is very close (5 mins walk) and you have a junction of 2 LRT lines here. This is very important since given the traffic conditions in KUL, you should always prefer the metro transport. The Chinatown is also very close and which is good for shopping/eating/photoshooting purposes. New goers should try the food over there. There is a money exchange counter in the same compound. The buses ply from almost in-front of the hotel gate. The TV is small (18-20') and KUL it seems, has only few channels. Overall, you can go here for a decent budget stay and spend that money in exploring KUL city. I would recommend this hotel to bachelors, couples but not for aged folks.
