Great hosts and brilliant budget stay

Honest, friendly owners, conveniently located hotel, great value
I have been to Nepal 12 times over the last 18 years and have never really found more than adequate guest house in Kathmandu. Most have been either dirty, noisy, lacking hot water or have disingenuous or incompetent staff. From the moment I booked I was so impressed with the service, friendliness, helpfulness and honesty of Gopal and Ganga, the wonderful owners of the guesthouse. A late check in was no problem, a pre booked Lukla flight with none of the usual deception and argument over the exchange rate, booking of taxis at the standard rates and a clean room with 24 hour hot water is all provided. That in Kathmandu is not easy to find at exclusive hotels let alone the very affordable rate that is charged here. I was also there for Deepavali and they gave presents to the guests and made everyone feel part of the festival. It is also in the heart of Thamel but along a side street which means it is away from the noise. I will certainly make this my permanent base in Kathmandu and recommend this highly to everyone looking for the perfect budget guesthouse in Kathmandu.

Kathmandu Trekkers Basecamp!

This hotel is run by Mr. Gopal Pandey and family. Mr. Gopal Went out of his way to provide excellent customer service. The central location is near the major streets, but is on a quiet side street.
My stay here was excellent! I plan to stay here again when I return to Kathmandu. The best part for me was becoming friends with the owner, Mr. Gopal. He is an honest man that goes out of his way to serve his customers. Everyone on his side of town seems to know and respect him. If you are a budget trekker, this is a great place to stay. Mr. Gopal has worked as a porter in the past. He provided me good advice on my trip to Everest Base Camp. He also arranged all of my trekking details, including my plane tickets to/from Lukla, my trekking permit, and my own personal guide/porter. This was all done upon my arrival, and made my trip really easy. The location of the hotel is near to tons of trekking gear shops, so I was able to pick up everything needed all within about a 5 minute walk. Mr. Gopal also showed me a great Indian Restaurant, and a nice place for breakfast. Needed food for the trip, Mr. Gopal took me to the store that had many trekking foods already pre-packed in small portions. Then off to a pharmacy and ATM, Mr. Gopal is the man. So there you go, I can't say enough good things about Mr. Gopal and his family. The earthquake that hit Kathmandu had a major effect on the the city and its people. They are working to rebuild. The Bright Star Hotel has had to work around a few repairs, but they have done a great job trying to make sure their guests have an excellent stay. If you are a trekker arriving in Kathmandu, you likely just need a basic place to stay as you prepare to head to the mountains. Bright Star Hotel was just perfect for me. Another thing that is interesting is that the hotel is located just across from a large very old outdoor bath. It has been damaged by the quake, but is still used everyday by many of the locals. I hope you enjoy your stay. Have fun...........

Before and after earthquake

Location and staff
We spent one night in Bright Star before earthquake. Hotel is Thamel standard, no extra comfort, but clean. Hot shower and electricity is available 24 hours a day. Staff is very friendly. When we came back after earthquake, hotel was closed, because two adjacent houses are totaly damaged. But the owner told us, his hotel will be reopend in two weeks, after water and electricity is reconected. Please help to restart Bright Star hotel by creating new bookings.

Great hotel with great staff!

staff, clean, location.
Our stay in Bright Star was great! We stayed 2 weeks or more there. Very close to center, clean, good wifi, hot shower, and the most important think the owner and his family is so nice and friendly. He help me with Indian Visa, he accompanied me to the hospital when I got sick, I booked with him a Trekk to Poon Hill..He explained every single detail of the trekk to me. And we talked a lot about Nepal and my country. Stay in this hotel is like to stay in relatives house! I really recommend this hotel to everyone. We was there when the earthquake happened. Was terrible. But we had so luck that the bright star building has withstood the earthquake. I hope the things get back to the normal in Bright star And Nepal!

Great family-run place

Staff, location, value
Great. Just like all the reviews I read, they do a great job and really work hard to make the guests happy and this really made a difference for me. Great dining close by, went to Western Tandori at owner's suggestion and it was a hit as well. Thank you and I will see you again soon.

Fantastic Owner Gopal

The owner is friendly, caring and helpful, the location is perfect and close to everything, the price is affordable and good
My wife and I arrived at almost midnight, the owner Gopel stayed up to meet us, unfortunatly I left my day pack with my phone, tablet etc in the taxi. Gopel started ringing around that night, he took us to the Tourist Police Station the next day giving us a guided tour as we went. After all the paper work he pointed us in the direction of some of the more interesting sites in Kathmandu. He continued to call the police, airport and taxi company until he had tracked down my bag then took us to the airport to pick it up. He went above and beyond the call of duty and would only accept a thank you in return. Gopal was also a porter and guide for many years, he has an absolute wealth of information and experiance which he was only too willing to share. He runs a travel company and is more than happy to give advice, telling us everything from the best priced transport, the best rivers to go rafting in to the best route to take and villages to stay at on our hiking trip. He seems to really care about his guests and wants them to have a great time in Nepal. As for the hotel it is clean, comfortable and in an excellent location in the main tourist area of Thamel. It is close to everthing you need but down a quiet side street where we where not bothered by the constant horn honking that pervades most of Kathmandu.

Great place with friendly staff

Location, price, staff
We stayed two nights before heading trekking. The manager was very friendly and helpful, and have us tips on our upcoming trek as he used to work as a guide/porter. The room was clean enough and the bathroom had hot water, which was great. Great value for money. We tried to stay again after our trek but the guesthouse was full!
