A cosy-ish place

Location. Quietness. Clean.

I think this 'hotel' is nothing more than a glorified hostel whereby a Thai house has been converted into a 'hotel', and in a kind of nice way. Having to walk across the landing to go to the toilet, and not having a small fridge, kettle or complimentary water in the rooms exemplify this, and this was a 'superior' room! I didn't find the staff particularly friendly and the lady didn't seem very pleased to see me when I arrived for check-in, which kind of made me feel like I was was intruding upon some-ones home! I was not used to being told to 'take your shoes off' at the front door of a hotel before especially without a 'please'! It wasn't terrible experience.. it just all felt a bit 'weird'... Personally, I won't stay there again. However if you are easily pleased and are only interested your hotel's location, then this could be the place for you! Breakfast is a self-service affair where you have to rummage around and kind of fend for yourself.. I kind of liked that after a while although at first I felt like a burglar who had just broken into somebody's house! To end on a positive, the house/hotel was very clean and the staff do tend to take a lot of pride in their residence. Oh, and the wi-fi speed was 'intermittent' at best (but that tends to be the case in a lot of hotels these days).

normally very good, but mixed reaction to bedbugs

location, quiet, General cleanliness

Normally my stay at the guesthouse I without problems. However when i discovered bedbugs as did others, we reported this to night staff who suggested we refer to with morning staff. Morning staff said refund for the following night would only be 50% because we didn't cancel the day before. Morning person was grumpy and impolite all day after, even snapping at new guest who wasn't part of the bed bug complaint. I caught pics of bedbugs the final night. Night staff was sympathetic and let me rest elsewhere. The day manager needs to respect customers when real complaint is made, and consider solving the issue. She had cleaning lady sweep room and apply General insect spray but still a problem. I stayed on because she insisted the room was sprayed and safe. My pictures say otherwise. The other guest who left without a full refund actually works for Lonely Planet, and the woman who received rude behavior is part of Malaysian tourism. This was unlucky service for house 23 this time.

normally great service and conditions, but handled

location, night staff friendly, kitchen
5.3
Normally when I stay here I get the best service and support, which is why I returned regularly, as has my girlfriend. However, on this visit, the morning manager or staff person did not handle a customer complaint well. After my second night, I woke up with bug bites all over my body. Two otheR guests, a lonely planet writer and a dOcumentary filmmaker, discovered bugs in their bedsheets. They alerted me and we realised my bites were bedbUg bites. We broUght OuR cOncerns tO the night shift person, and she suggEsted we wait tO talk to the mOrning manager. Meanwhile, the other guests wanted To sleep in the lobby or in the space outside the dorm, it were told they could not and would have to sleep in the infested beds. The next morning we spoke to the manager, and instead of apologising or offering us options, she asked if we wanted to cancel our next night. She said she would only give 50% refund because we should have cancelled the previous day (before the bedbugs were discovered). She claimed she would have the beds sprayed with insect repellant (which isn't effective vs. Bedbugs). The two guests left, and I stayed hoping things would be ok. However, for the rest of the day, the manager was impolite and short with me. She was even impolite to a new customer who came in and later complained about the room. We only notified her so she can fix the problem, not cause trouble to her! That night, I checked my bed and found bed bugs in my pillows and sheets and took pictures. The night staff was sympathetic, and helped me find a comfortable left solution to finish my last night. The day manager doesn't realise, but the lonely planet WriteR is updating the Thailand Bangkok guide. This was not a good customer service for house 23.
