Great Location
I think the best thing that is going for this Hotel is the Location. Located in former French Concession and a few minutes to all the restaurants and bars and a short walking distance to JingAn
The hotel was pleasant - clean and for a weekend I would highly recommend this place again. It isn't luxury such as other brands but it did the job for weekend in Shanghai.

little gem in French concession
Location, old colonial charm, large bathroom
Very nice. Some ideas for improvement: 1. carpet was old, dirty and stained with cigarette burns 2. get rid of the plastic flower arrangements or replace with fresh flowers 3. improve breakfast offering

A british house in China
Stylistic, well furnished and quiet
A very nice experience to try out a british style historical house in China. It is near the heart of the busiest business city but it is quiet and like a paradise. Its surrounding buildings are an asset to the hotel as well.

Pleasant and safe stay in the heart of Shanghai.
Nice gardens, historic sense of the architecture, central location.
In general the staff was helpful and attentive. Recommended for short stays as it definitely worth of paying a marginal premium for experiencing the traditional Shanghai houses.

Comfortable stay.
Its accessibility. Comfortable room. Quietness
Very good. But the shower has a little malfunction. And there was no elevator.

historical villas surrounded by gardens
nice location and unique buildings
We enjoyed our stay at Julu Garden Villa. The villas are tucked away behind some businesses on Julu Road. We liked that they were old historical buildings in Shanghai. It was quiet, except for at 10am when construction started at a nearby property. However, this is a Shanghai. We opted for the Western breakfast, but it was strange--mayonnaise salad, chicken nuggets, french fries, fried egg, pound cake, mediocre coffee and bacon. Overall, we really enjoyed our short stay in the Penthouse Villa. If there was an option for a room with a king room and no breakfast, I would chose that next time and just eat at Mr. Pancake right outside the gate.

Not Worth The High Prices
Comfy/Large Bed, Reasonably Clean, Above Average Location
Our stay at Julu Garden Villa was average overall. In my humble opinion, even the worst and/or cheapest room in a five star hotel should still be five star quality and honestly I don't think that was the case here. The minor cons: The shower was essentially in an airing closet with a sloped ceiling meaning I had to crouch like a hobbit just to see the water (and I am 6ft2 so - whilst tall for China - by no means a freak of nature in regular height terms). The room was fairly worn, it looked as though it had been faded by the sun and there were a lot of pieces of peeling paint and bug marks on the walls - hardly the be all and end all of the place but in such a small room, as aforementioned, you expect a little more from an expensive, five-star estabishment. And so for the major cons: The internet does not work, literally. I have seen this in other reviews and I promise you that it is the case - even when we got a plug-in router from reception, the internet simply doesn't work. The TV has no English-language channels, despite it being said in the brouchure that it does, again not a major negative - but I don't like being lied to. On the same note, when you check-in, you have to pay a 500yuan deposit - maybe it says this somewhere on Agoda - but if it does, it's obviously not particularly clearly stated because we had no idea and regardless, it's an odd and unsettling thing to demand as soon as someone has just come off a flight from God knows where and just wants to sleep. So in conclusion, maybe if you are paying for one of the bigger, way more expensive and fancy rooms you might enjoy this place but if you are going for the (in relative terms) cheaper rooms - expect to stay in the upstairs servants quarters (essentially) of these bigger, pricier rooms and be woken up by the loud Chinese people occupying the room below you most mornings - or, in other words, dodge this place and just look for somewhere else to stay.
