Funky but Fine

Very clean, comfortable bed, secret feeling of a huge old mansion hidden behind banal storefronts, great location
first the problems--despite a phone call from the train station, we rang the bell at the gate repeatedly and no one came to let us in. not what you want at midnight with a cold wind blowing. (fortunately, someone on their way out let us in.)then the staff put us in the wrong room and had us move 10 minutes later--fortunately before we had gone to bed. our new room didn't seem to have a heat source and we couldn't go to sleep with the door propped open. the good side: in spite of the name, the guest house is very japanese. it is quiet and clean, you exchange your boots or shoes for slippers at the entrance, the bedclothes are of good quality and pleasing design, and the staff is very polite. if you prefer to stay in an unusual place, centrally located, this guest house could be right for you. we didn't regret our visit, but we did suggest that the bell be repaired.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip: Try to get a room with ensuite bathroom. Try to eat at Supermarket on Augusta (a couple of blocks away) and share their small plates with a loving friend. Wander Kensington Market and buy a warm hat. Have a red-bean bun and tea at a Chinese bakery on Spadina. Ride the streetcar west and eat oysters on Ossington. Be happy.
