Quelle Delight!

Old Shanghai architectural charm, charming/attentive staff, restaurant
9.7
An old Shanghai house apparently converted to this small boutique hotel, my room was small but charmingly designed. Best cuddly robe ever. Breakfast basic - eggs/ham/toast - but when I asked for rice because of wheat allergy, the next morning eggs/ham/rice! Adjacent restaurant features Japanese food and the Beatles - fine fine food, attentive staff. Only surprise was that the hotel staff spoke minimal English, so that was a bit of a challenge, but the young women were so delightful and eager to please that it we worked it out. I loved this hotel experience.

Misleading Agoda listing

Nice location, friendly staff, charming old building albeit not suitable for hotel
5.7
"Ketangjian Boutique Hotel" is not a "boutique hotel"; it is an old house that somebody has halfway converted into a six-room hotel. The place is not up to standard either physically or operationally. My room was so small and so randomly shaped that the floor plan had barely room for a tiny desk and no place for a bed or a chest of drawers. (There was a closet and no rod, just one hook inside the closet and one outside on the door.) To sleep, I had to climb something like a ladder to get to a sort of shelf with a mattress on it, built under the ceiling. There was no warning of any such conditions in the Agoda listing for "Ketangjian Boutique Hotel", only pictures of more conventional rooms. "Ketangjian Boutique Hotel" is clean enough, but there are many signs of a very tight operating margin, such as towels and bed linens that are threadbare or worn through. Also furniture that is about to fall apart, as one chair did while I was writing. I'm not going to go through all the inadequacies of the room furnishings at "Ketangjian Boutique Hotel", but there was an improvisational feel to every feature of the way my room had been put together. There was nowhere to put the soap and shampoo in the shower, the doors had to be opened and shut in a particular order or you would never be able to use them, and so on. The staff are nice, friendly people. They don't seem aware they are running a sort of halfway-refurbished boarding house rather than a hotel. I don't think they ever go home. They always seem to be sleeping with their heads on tables in the sake bar downstairs until you need something, and then they wake up and cheerfully but somewhat sleepily take care of whatever you need. The price listed on Agoda was (round figures) $70; this was presented as a discount from a normal rate of $280 or so, which I now believe must be an entirely theoretical full price for a night at "Ketangjian Boutique Hotel".

Very nice boutique hotel in good location

Nice deco, nice staff and good location
7.3
This hotel is a very nice small boutique hotel with very nice art deco interiors. I was staying in the single room and the layout is very nice. The bed is very very comfortable. But there is problem with mosquito(even though they provide the mosquito repelling device but didn't help) and also the hot water tap in the shower is a bit confusing.

Cute but service without a smile

Old Shanghai charm, good location
6
The owner/operator was pretty gruff and the staff didn't say much. It was a cute place and a welcome change from the many western style hotels in Shanghai, but it's old Shanghai charm also meant a no smile service attitude. There was breakfast included in our rate but it took 20 minutes for the cook to show up when we (seemed like we were the only guests there) asked for it, which meant that the cleaning lady yelled into the attached kitchen for several minutes.

Good location for French Concession

Was a great little room, it was small though. But big enough for one person with small desk and Internet connection. A nice soft comfortable bed.
