About Kingsgate Hotel Greymouth

Modern rooms and a central location combine to make an easy choice for visitors looking for quality lodging in the heart of Greymouth. One of the city’s charming heritage buildings, originally built in 1906, the restaurant, bar, and reception of Kingsgate Hotel Greymouth encompass the original building and are decorated in keeping with its colonial past. Walking distance to the center of town with easy access to the train and bus stations, hotel facilities include secure parking, internet access, and an in-house bar and restaurant. The historic town of Greymouth is nestled between the foothills of the Southern Alps and the windswept beaches of the west coast and makes for a convenient base to explore this seldom visited region of New Zealand’s untamed South Island.

A dated hotel
The hotel needs freshening up. It looks really tired and dated. It's difficult to make it look absolutely clean. The receptionist was nice and pleasant, so does the barman. The restaurant staff were having a busy night with a bus load of tourists dining that night but there wasn't even one available to entertain other hotel guests. We asked the barman if we can dine in the bar instead and he said yes. He took care of us which turned our night around.

Close to cinema
My room was with a dirty floor. No WiFi in room. Limited WiFi in lobby. Good TV and walking distance to a cinema. Nothing special. Very limited parking spaces.

Location good, staff very helpful
Room was very old fashioned (pre 60's?) really need an upgrade. But we did appreciated that it was a ground floor unit, as nes abve had no acess lift - not easy with suitcases !

Over-rated with terrible bathrooms
location, helpful staff, free parking
Decor of hotel and room looks like it is stuck in a time warp. Near train station so that was a plus, although we would have bypassed staying at greymouth altogether if we knew that it is very viable to hop on the train immediately from our intercity bus (we were worried if the bus would be late). Greymouth is a rather sad place especially if you do not have a vehicle, most eateries close really early and we had to retreat to the very unimpressive restaurant. The worse part of our stay was really the hotel bathroom. The door could not close fully and water leaked to the bathroom floor. It was a terrible mess. At least the hotel staff members are helpful.

Disappointed this time
We didn't stay in the main hotel like we had done before (which was nice). we were put in the outside rooms by the carpark, which were very tired, noisy and a bit smelly. I realize we paid cheaper than normal but still was very disappointed. would stay again but only if we could stay in the main hotel but not sure how to do that when booking in.

Cleanliness an issue
Bathrooms, reception staff
I know Greymouth has had some tough times, but this hotel seemed quite tired. The building inside and out needed a good clean. I had to scrape someone elses (previous occupants) toothpaste off the bathroom tiles. The bedspread had stains on it. I guess I was expecting more.
