Beautiful setting on Uji River

Our botan room was spacious and very comfortable, the river view was lovely and the location was walkable to the World Heritage sights.
The front desk person that took us to our room when we arrived wasn't very helpful. She did not explain how to use the complicated safe or tea pot. We requested an iron, but she didn't send it. We had to request it again from another young gentleman who was very pleasant and had excellent English. The food for dinner was plentiful but disappointing in flavor and quality. I wouldn't pay for or eat the traditional Japanese meal again and we are generally accepting of many foods from various cultures. The setting of the ryokan and Uji River views were absolutely beautiful! Our botan room was modern and really spectacular! The bar/lounge area lacked warmth and we couldn't order drinks although there was a welcome drink upon arrival.

Nice facilities, beautiful location.
Best room in the hotel with a sightseeing on Uji river and bridges. The natural hot spring tub recovered my fatigue in sudden.

Cozy hotel in a peaceful paradise

Great defined Kyoto style food, great river-view and quiet atmosphere
I love the hotel and the services provided. We enjoy a very nice river view room and convenient hub to explore Uji which is a peaceful and friendly town. The hotel manager/owner had good service mind and tried hard to accommodate our request. The hotel might not be fit for those who wish to explore Kyoto as Uji is in the southern part between Kyoto and Nara. But for us, it is a worthwhile trade off for a peaceful town. The food here is superb both breakfast and dinner. We had kaiseki in many ryokans before and think that its Satori restaurant is one of the best we had.

Exceptional ryokan in Uji near kyoto

Impecable service, great ryokan with onsen, quick train ride to kyoto
This is a really nice traditional Japanese ryokan hotel which is booked primarily by Japanese tourists (not business hotel). Excellent staff speak good English and can help you translate (including how to use the coffee maker, phone, or fancy Japanese toilets). Wear comfortable shoes that can be easily removed because only slippers are worn in traditional ryokan (slippers provided). The hotel has wonderful onsen facilities and massage chairs. Good free wifi in lobby and rooms. Traditional breakfast must be booked in advance. Also the teppanyaki steak house is fantastic (all are set courses check online for menu). We stayed in the large Botan room which is not a traditional tatami room, but has a platform bed and a gorgeous view of the pagoda and footbridge across the river. This is an excellent room if you are not used to staying in traditional tatami room where you must bend down and sit on the ground on tatami mats. There is a large dining table too. The room amenities are great so no need to bring anything. Ask hotel how to use onsen spa. TV channels are all in Japanese, but why watch TV when you have Uji and Kyoto to explore? The UNESCO Byodoin temple is 5 min walk up the street and nearby is a small street full of quaint little tea houses that Uji is famous for. There is a train to Kyoto from the Uji train station about 10-15 min walk from hotel (or take a taxi for 800 yen or free hotel shuttle bus). The train to Kyoto central station runs roughly every 15 min and costs about 240 yen each way and takes 15-25 min depending on which train you catch. You will love this place!!!

Impeccable Ryokan

Lovely traditional ryokan style hotel, close to Byodoin temple, great food
We stayed with our elderly parents at Hanayashiki and really enjoyed the traditional Japanese style tatami rooms and the onsen spas. The traditional Japanese meals were delicious. Advance reservations required. We booked the yamabuki room for our parents and stayed in the Botan room for ourselves. These are modern rooms which may appeal to travelers not accustomed to staying in traditional tatami rooms. However, the hotel offers good sized tatami rooms which are wonderful if you are looking for truly authentic experience. Location is along a picturesque river in Uji, a very atmospheric town with lots of cute tea houses, about 20 min train ride from Central Kyoto station, or 40 min by taxi. Train is cheaper and faster. Would definitely recommend this hotel.

You're forcing to pick three things when I can't
The staff was disoriented. The tatami and carpets were stained. And the wine served to guests was A cheap Chllean.

Complete our honeymoon

Room, food and kindest staff
Our room was in traditional Japanese style, very spacious and clean with yukata, socks, towels, face wash, shampoo.. and everything! We had both dinner and breakfast in their restaurant, they were so nice and highly recommend it. Staff been very nice to us throughout the stay, the last day they even offered us a free ride to the station, as it was cold outside! We are planning to revisit them again in our wedding anniversary :)

Best detox, zen hotel

location, food, service
It was pleasantly surprising. We thought the location away from central Kyoto will be an issue, but where this place is at --- it's perfect. It's like transporting yourself back to old Japan. There's not a lot of action happening here with most shops closing at 7pm, but it's the perfect place to detox, go back to basics and just absorb the wonderful nature around you. We travelled with a toddler and thought this is going to be boring for her -- oh we were wrong. The fun you experience here is not the fun generated by artificial means. It's the fun of truly connecting with all that is around you. Excellent place.

If you appreciate Uji, this is a don't miss

location, experience, service
When I booked, I didn't know where Uji was and assumed it was closer to the center of Kyoto. However, upon taking the time to appreciate the wonderful location of Hanayashiki Ukifune-en, we were extremely pleased. It is on a serene river, surrounded by beautiful hiking trails and forested hills. It is a short walk to the World Heritage site. It was really great to step away from the city and the touristy surroundings. We were the only Americans in our full hotel. We loved the dinner and the traditional breakfast. Now that we know more, we would love to come back and spend more time. Next time, we will get road bikes and discover the area around.
