Overpriced

Room, bathroom, wood panelling
5.7
This hotel is vastly overpriced. I will allow that the room was lovely with a huge bathroom but the food was abysmal. The set menu of £49.50 was so disappointing and we were looking forward to our dinner but... a glass of wine in the bar had to be returned as it was well and truly 'off',not corked just ancient. The food was truly dreadful, the staff an odd lot of locals who run the place as the owner lives abroad and it shows. Much is made of a tour of the vegetable gardens and also the menu shows 'garden strawberries' etc etc. Rubbish. The gardens resemble an old, unloved allotment. We did see lots of gooseberries, a few tomatoes but that was about it. At the entrance to the manor house there is a fountain - not working, of course, surrounded by weeds, dead flowers etc and outside the front door was an old plastic pot which had once contained a plant. Yes. the house itself is a fine example of wood panelling so lots of character there but nothing to see, nowhere to go of any beauty. We went for a walk around the gardens which mainly consisted of a sloping field so not great for a walk. We ended up traipsing around the cemetery of the church which is situated within the grounds as many of these country churches seem to be. There is a creepy atmosphere within the house and if you read the history of the occupants it was obviously not a happy place and we couldn't wait to get away. Best to carry on your journey for another hour to the beautiful Carlyon Bay, great views, professional and friendly staff (mainly Eastern European and so hard-working) wonderful views and best of all, great food and wine. I simply cannot understand these other reviews as I would have to be paid to return there.
