agoda.com presents Red-carpet rates for the 68th Venice Film Festival

SINGAPORE (August 17, 2011)

agoda.com, Asia’s global hotel booking site and part of the Nasdaq-listed Priceline Group (Nasdaq: PCLN), is rolling out the red carpet for the Venice Film Festival 2011 with a selection of hotel specials in this romantic Italian city.

Held on Venice-Lido, an 11 kilometer-long resort island facing the Adriatic Sea, this annual cinematic celebration is one of the biggest events on the movie calendar. This year’s festival runs from August 31 to September 10 and, as always, will debut a selection of the best contemporary films from around the world.

Twenty-two movies have been nominated for this year’s top prize – the Golden Lion. Contenders for the award include some big names in cinema, including George Clooney, who directed The Ides of March, A Dangerous Method by David Cronenberg and Shame directed by Steve McQueen. A film adaptation of Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights by Andrea Arnold is also in the running for the Golden Lion.

Screening out of competition but guaranteed to attract plenty of interest is Al Pacino's Wilde Salome, a documentary exploring the controversial Oscar Wilde play Salome. The actor/director will also receive the prestigious Jaeger-Le Coultre 'Glory to the Filmmaker' Award for his contribution to film. Also set to garner much media attention is W.E., directed by Madonna. A royal drama about the romance of King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, the film is Madonna's first feature-length offering as director.

This year the film festival is part of La Biennale di Venezia, a celebration of contemporary art, film, dance, theatre, music and architecture. La Biennale exhibitions and performances are held across the city, allowing travelers to mix sightseeing with high culture to gain a deeper appreciation of Venice's connection to the arts. Educational and theatrical components of La Biennale continue throughout October and November, so visitors arriving after the film festival can still catch a performance or join a guided gallery tour.
