Deira

Deira is the oldest district in Dubai, and it’s the only part of the city that has managed to hang on to its heritage in the midst of modern development. Hotels in Deira line the east bank of Dubai Creek, with abra water taxis crossing to the Bur Dubai side where the Dubai Museum and the Burj Khalifa tower are located.

Attractions in Deira include traditional markets like the Spice Souk. Merchants’ shelves here have been stacked with fragrant spices and incense since the souk opened in the 1830s. Deira’s Gold Souk is even more impressive, and it’s the largest market of its kind in the whole world.

Heritage House is another site worth visiting. It’s close to Dubai Creek, where it was built in 1890 and restored a century later. It continues to be an important stop for commercial tourists. To learn more about Deira’s historical role, travelers can visit Al-Ahmadiya School, a school-turned-museum that documents neighborhood history. A walking tour of Deira is a great way to become immersed in the history of this area.
