About Morningside Inn

Freshly renovated and kind to budgets, this original pre-war property offers dorms and private rooms with vintage appeal. Located north of the Upper West Side, this property is in the quiet and safe residential area of Morningside, close to Columbia University and popular with the student set. Convenient to public transport (in particular the 110th street subway), Morningside Inn is a short ride from the theaters and Times Square and is close to many cafes and inexpensive eateries dishing up everything from Southern fried foods to salads and soups. Rooms themselves run the gamut from single basic to deluxe apartment (with kitchen amenities) and are as handy for long-stay travelers as they are for the property's resident students.

Great location. Staff were rude and generally unhelpful apart from the one young lady on reception. Toilets smelt of urine. Poo stain on the wall for the whole duration we were there. Shower knob not secure and kept falling off whilst showing which hurt my toe!! Doors really heavy and slammed by guests would wake you up during the night. Breakfast was poor. Limited supplies. Get there within the first 10 mins of opening or nothing left. Bed was comfortable but left with bites on my body... If more effort was put into the upkeep of this place, it could be really successful. Would I stay again? No.

Does the job
Morningside inn is no frills, you'll get a room that is clean enough. Had an ancient air con that worked (we went in July and it was HOT). But talk about value for money! Clean room in great location even with surprisingly good coffee served in the basement from 8-9.30am... But don't expect the hotels promise of a 'continental breakfast'.. It was 'corn' muffins.. Never seen a greasy muffin before until that holiday. Didn't stop me. There's no on sweet toilets but two on each floor and was never a problem having to wait. Showers did the job but don't expect consistent hot water. Everything seems to be working.. But only just. Staff was fine but not overly welcoming, cleaners come once a day around 11am and make the beds which was an unexpected bonus. TVs in rooms have some great shows on the free on demand section. To sum up, I'd definitely stay at morningside inn again. Don't let the bad reviews fool you, as long as you don't expect the world on a shoestring budget you'll be surprised with how much your getting for your money!!

Good location not worth the poor service
We were told upon our arrival that the room type we had booked was being fixed, so they put us in a room with a shared bath. We were told we could switch rooms the next day. We went out for a day of sightseeing, and when we got back that night, we were told they had given away our room since we weren't there to ask to have our rooms switched. When we approached the manager the next day, he switched our room after blaming us for not being proactive about it. Then when we asked for two more pillows since they had only given us one pillow for three people, we were told it would be hard to get more pillows until they finally decided to take some from a vacant room. The WiFi didn't work well, and the free continental breakfast was just prepackaged muffins. There also wasn't coin laundry available even though the listing said they had it.

Great value for money
Very close to metro/train stop. Clean and nice place to stay for a budget traveler, who want's his/hers own private room. Not a five stars hotel, but neither was the price. Great value for money. One of a few hotels were you had your own fridge in your room.
