Be careful with scams
We stayed at the Movenpick in Giza on the night of 10 July 2016. While we were only at the hotel for one night and cannot comment on the services offered by the hotel in too much depth, our overnight stay was comfortable and relaxing. We enjoyed the view of the pyramids from our balcony and believe that the resort is well suited for a family visiting the pyramids and other sights in Giza. After checking out of the hotel on the second day, we had an incident involving the concierge desk who had arranged a driver to take us to the pyramids. Without venturing into all of the details, the incident involved a driver who took us to a group of people operating an unofficial camel tour through the pyramids. The tour operators had overcharged us by 750.00 Egyptian pounds which we were only able to resolve through the intervention of the Tourist Police. As the entire incident seemed to have been arranged by the concierge desk, we approached the hotel manager to inform him of our concerns. We were eventually offered monetary compensation of 210.00 pounds by the hotel being in respect of the amount paid by us to the “tour operator”, in addition we were given a room in which we could shower before leaving the hotel. During the resolution of the incident by the hotel manager we were informed that the hotel would do its best to investigate the issue as the driver was “new”. The hotel manager seemed to be very understanding of our concerns and ensured us that the driver was independent of the hotel and consequently not under the control of the hotel. Having listened to the hotel manager, my partner and I agreed that we could not accept the monetary compensation as we felt reassured that the hotel was not involved and the driver was independent. We therefore returned the money and room key to the hotel manager before having lunch at a restaurant in the hotel. On our way out we were surprised to find that the driver was sitting at the concierge desk and assi

Good base for Pyramids and Alexandria
Location, Price, Breakfast
Moevenpick Pyramids is ideal for proximity to the Giza plateau and on the road to Alexandria. The garden rooms are basic and well worn - however with a young family, they worked well having the gardens and access to the pools. This is not a 5 star hotel - however you are not paying 5 star prices, so its a reasonable price / quality hotel, for European standards its 3 star in my opinion. Breakfasts are good, however the other restaurants are fairly unimaginative - pity they do not do a better job of Egyptian food at the hotel, which should be their competitive advantage. We tried to use the tour desk to book a hotel transfer for arrival, however they didn't turn up ( at 3 am .. ) so we were thrown into the deep end right from the start with the local taxi guys .. always fun. I do not recommend the travel desk, there are plenty of travel companies who can organize you cars and drivers / guides who are cheaper and better. I recommend the hotel on the basis that its cheap and cheerful, but not like the Moevenpicks overseas.
