Problems: 1. Shared bathroom is not in the hotel building but in a separate area out in the backyard. So if you have to pee in the middle of the night you have to walk downstairs, across the yard in the dark and possibly rain. 2. There was only one outlet in the room and it was being used for the fan, so if I wanted to charge my phone I had to turn off the fan in the stifling heat. 3. What bothered me the most: my room had a big window that faced the common area balcony where guests hang out all the time, with see through curtains. So basically people hanging out drinking beers in the common area could see everything I was doing, giving me virtually no privacy. 4. The staff here were the least welcoming out of everywhere I stayed during a month in Myanmar. When I arrived I didn't even get so much as a smile or any helpful information. Just handed me the key and I had to find the room on my own. No help with my bags or anything like that. They advertise free pickup from bus, but didn't respond to my email asking to arrange pickup. So I had to find my way on my own (took a taxi) at 4 am. My analysis is that Mr. Charles has a bit of a monopoly on the backpacker community here since they are well known. They know they will always have customers, so they don't have to try as hard to impress you or provide good quality service because if you leave, plenty of people will still come. Also their focus seems to have moved to the more upmarket Mr. Charles Hotel, so the cheaper guesthouse goes a bit neglected. So I recommend taking your money somewhere else. Give a chance to one of the other great hotels in town that will probably be much more excited to have you and be much more welcoming. But on a positive note, they do have a yummy breakfast buffet! Also this seems to be the place 95% of young backpackers stay so if you like following the crowd rather than making your own decisions, this is the place for you.

don't stay in the cheapest rooms

The trekking they arrange, nice staff and filling breakfast
This hotel comes with quite a big reputation, after staying there I know now the reputation is for the excellent trekking.... not the rooms! We stayed in the $14 room and it felt like an old prison cell. I don't know what there other rooms are like, but if your on a budget stay in the big hotel just across the road (its much better value) and just arrange the trekking through mr Charles.

Breakfast, trekking, value for money
My stay was great, trekking and trekking staff fabulous! They told me someone would be there to check me out along with breakfast at 5am. But no one was there so just left my key. Forgetting they had my passport! Which was a nightmare to get back. One male receptionist who I found off anyway didn't believe I had paid for breakfast on first day and off when I asked where was good to eat outside me Charles. And had handed my passport to some man on a bus. Not telling me who! And just kept saying some man. At bus station to meet. Well with no English and bus driver having NO idea. It was very hard and stressful! Not particularly helpful in the situation. Luckily my new guesthouse was a saviour in helping. Don't forget passport guys!! Otherwise the rest of staff are so polite and cute and room was amazing value and breakfast is good!
