A good hotel in a quiet location

The Mercure Hotel Chiang Mai is hotel is about 10-15 minutes taxi ride from the airport at a cost of 120 Baht (2.50 GBP) but with prior notice they will provide a shuttle but to pick you up at the airport. It is located about half a mile north of the moat. There is a large car park outside and a supermarket next to the hotel. Bank card machines are across the street. There is nothing of tourist interest in this area of Chiang Mai although having said that quite a lot of the gay venues are north of the moat. Heterosexual nightlife is generally to the south of the moat and a lot of it is around the night market. The hotel runs a shuttle bus to the market but taxi/tuk-tuk’s are relatively cheap. This is not a new hotel but management have made a bit of an effort to keep up to date although in this computer age a few more power sockets near the dressing table or work table would be useful. The rooms were spacious, clean and quite comfortable, in addition to the work surface/dressing table attached to the wall there was a large table and chair as well as a small coffee table. The bed was large and the pillows good. There was two free bottles of water and free coffee and tea making facilities as well. The pool is a good size, well maintained and has an attendant and towels there. There is 24hr room service and they charge 100 Baht (2 GBP) for the shuttle bus to the airport. Having stayed at a lot of different hotels in Chiang Mai over the years this is my first stay in Mercure and since I normally hire a jeep or car when I am here I believe I will use this hotel more in the future rather than the less comfortable hotels at similar prices nearer to the shopping areas.

We took a group of children from our Children's Home to Chiang Mai for the Water Festival. The pool was great for the kids when they were tired of the outside festivities. The staff was friendly and helpful with our large group of 15 people.

the staff greeted us with friendly smiles, the reception staff were very pleasant. this hotel is a bit dated but thats standard in thailand for any place over 5 years old. the location is out of the way, quiet neighbourhood surrounded by lots of hardware shops. there is a cheap market area approx. 300 metres to the left on the main road, cheap and delicious food, lots of shoe shops. we hired a small motorbike and found that we still rode over to the night bazaar area where everything a tourist needs is located in the one area. the mecure has comfortable beds (we had a twin room) and the cleaning staff are good. the swimming pool is not very inviting, just a rectangle on the third floor, 1.45m shallow end, so children would need constant supervision.

The location is very easy to access to the important places of chiang mai. Many good restuarants in the area and also they all are within a walking distance. Well paid for the price.
