Great location near river and shops, small rooms
just a block from the river, near everything

thang long hotel is a bargain just a short block from the riverside with several cafes, dinner cruises and speed boats to vung tau. there are many decent restaurants and interesting shops within a walking distance, although most are mainly for tourists. it is one of the rare inexpensive choices in the area of mostly large international hotels. be aware that the cheaper rooms are small, furnishing like your grandma's and beds really hard.
Tip Ciri-ciri Hotel:
If you don't like the noisy PNL area, but are on a budget, try this.

i took this hotel because after the dork dingy lyon dor hotel in phnom penh i wanted something better. i chose thanh long because it advertised a balcony/teaarce with the superior room. the hotel is fine and well located - but - there are no balconies/terraces at all in this hotel. you need to have this removed from their website. i was disappointed not to be able to walk outside my room for some open air and space as i had expected to. it is false advertising they are doing. also the breakfast is supplied in another hotel across the road.

had a good time in this hotel, it was close to the beach, the night life spot and plenty of restaurant choices around it.. ill defiantly reccomend the staff was nice and helpful more than what i was expecting for a 2 star hotel

I had reserved a bedroom with 2 beds. We were shown one with 1 bed. Another room with 2 beds , but in the back , so we switched to one VIP room on the 6th floor. 2 rooms , one I called the tearoom , and the bedroom. big enough , comfortable, clean, nice big bathroom. relatively quiet , as you know with the traffic in a town like Saigon .
Friendly and helpful staff.
Breakfast included ; but the restaurant is being renovated , so we had to go across the street to another hotel , part of the deal.
so overall , a good hotel , no complains at all.

Tip Penarik Perhatian/Pemandangan:
being on any street in Saigon , or others towns , one is overwhelmed by the demands of tours operators ; I must say it is not my favorite part of the trip. I first came to Laos , Vietnam and Cambodia in 1989 ; traveling was not easy back then , but I am glad to have seen those countries without all the traffic jams , and the noise that goes with it.
changes are inevitable , some good came out of it for some people , not all of them , but that could be said for so many other countries.
so I do not really have advices for things to see , just walk on the streets , and you will be ask and told what to see.
