Convenient and Friendly Hotel

Location, Helpfullness and Friendliness of Employees, Kitchen in Room
As opposed to several other reviewers of Napoleon on Kent, I did not find this hotel to be excessively noisy. Although there was some construction going on in the neighboring block, I never heard any of their work. The normal traffic noise was nothing above average and is to be expected in a big city. My room had a musty smell in the beginning, but that faded with time. There was always a strong, unpleasant odor in the hallway. It must have been something that was sprayed to cover up cooking smells (which were sometimes also strongly unpleasant). My room was large, with a well-equipped kitchen. The bed was one of the most cozy and comfortable beds I've ever had in a hotel. The lighting could have been better. There were no bright lights available, which made reading difficult. The drapes bothered me the most, because when they were closed, they were not wide enough to fully cover the window, so I didn't feel as if I had total privacy and the bright lights from outside coming through the gap in the drapes made it impossible to have a totally dark room to sleep in. Maybe the drapes are wider in other rooms in the hotel. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful and the location of the hotel is excellent. All in all, a good experience and a reasonable alternative to the more expensive hotels in the center of the city. I would definitely recommend it.

Great location, but overpriced and grim

The good thing about Napoleon on Kent is the location. You're about 15 minutes from the bridge, 10 more to the opera house and the rocks is on your doorstep. I stayed here when i first got to Sydney on a working visa and the location was great for visiting the CBD. You're near a Coles supermarket and there's a bottle shop 2 minutes away, really useful. The downsides are that the rooms are just grim and in dire need of a refurb. It's all hard floors and dim lights so the room is cold in temperature (I was there in July and the room was freezing even with the heat on, you're in the shadow of some skyscrapers so you get no sun in the room and it makes the room feel dark and a bit miserable) and in feel. The bed was on wheels so on the hard floor it just slid around whenever you moved, it was funny at first but quickly became really annoying. The TV had very few channels, the World Cup was on but the TV didn't have the free to air channel SBS so I had to stream from the web, again really annoying because the connection was slow. The room was cleaned once in 7 days, which I thought was poor as it meant no new towels etc. The sofa had a massive stain on it and in general the room felt like an average hall of residence at Uni. One more thing, I made about 6 short local phone calls to recruiters from my room and got charged $28 at checkout which was outrageous. I ended up going up the road on Sussex Street. It was cheaper and the rooms were so much nicer. I really wouldn't recommend Napoleon on Kent unless being near to the Harbour Bridge is absolutely essential to you.

clean and close to main sights

cheap , clean and central
Hotel is very central about halfway between darling harbour and opera house. Being an apartment you we did not get your room cleaned during our 3 day stay(think clean kicked in day 4). There was no washing machine in our room (but one coin op one by lobby. The rooms were a decent size and had a wee balcony facing the road . The check in check out was fast and seemed a safe hotel. my biggest gripe was that i could not get any internet service for my stay. but overall not to bad a stay good , also a taxi stand outside which was handy when going out
