Amazing property with super helpful reception staf
restaurant is a differnt story though: stuffy waiters with poor English, favoring japanese guests, presenting every miso soup as if it was a miracle, stretching a simple breakfast to a one hour ordeal...

Disappointing considering the reputation and cost
This hotel was once a palace. It now looks old and in need of some serious renovation. Considering the cost of the room is was quite disappointing, especially after our stays in some really nice hotels in other places in Japan. I do not recommend it

Lovely hotel, great staffs
The hotel itself is full of amazing histories. It was fascinating to just look around and learn about its history. I want to specially point out that the staffs are amazing, super polite and accommodating. My husband and I were stepping out for dinner one night, it was drizzling a bit, didn't bother us that much, so we walked out without opening the umbrella in my backpack, 20 seconds later, the lady who greeted us at the front door chased us down the hill just to give us two umbrellas, while she was running in the rain herself. We felt so special staying at Nara hotel, and would recommend it to anyone who plan to visit Nara. We ourselves would definitely go back in the future. Fu-Ni

Looks good on the outside; inside needs help
Location, history, Japanese food
The hotel has history. The outside looks great. The rooms are old. Bathrooms need serious help: the water turns scorching hot without warning. Although the staff is very friendly, they need serious help with their English.

Generally OK
The hotel itself is a point of interest in Nara. It looks very nice from outside. Staffs are as friendly and helpful as other good hotels. The room & facilities however are not in par with the other ones I experienced in Japan. More specifically, the Air conditioning did not seem to be working and the heater in our room was not functioning as well... The hotel sent a staff for investigation however did not manage to fix it. It was quite cold during the night and made the experience kinda disappointing. I would still recommend this to my friends for one night stay or so.

Nice hotel in a great location
(1) Great location - within a walking distance to the great park and temples, (2) good ambience, and (3) courteous staff.
I stayed at this hotel 19 years ago and loved it, so I wanted to stay here again. The best part is its location. Both times I stayed at the "New" wing, but this time I felt the room, especially the bathroom, was quite dated and could use some renovation. Restaurants were pricy, including the breakfast. I will stay at this hotel again for its location, in spite of the outdated bathroom, but will not eat here.
