Absolutely Fantastic!

Staff friendliness, cleanliness, free little events in the hotel.
1.) Rooms were very clean and spacious - so much closet space for only two people!!! Free tea snacks and bottled water EVERY day. 2.) Every morning, we had the option to attend a free tea ceremony (with accompanying snacks). This was really fascinating to watch (and delicious to try!). 3.) Take a left straight out of the hotel, walk about ten to fifteen minutes, and you're at the imperial palace gardens. Take a right straight on, and you can either go to the train station in less than 5 mins, or Teramachi market in about ten minutes. 4.) For Obon (mid August), we had a free presentation about the festival, and we were able to watch the Daimonji from the roof - we saw three of the characters on fire on the mountains! 5.) The staff were so so friendly and obliging, their mannerisms were so calm and approachable - nothing was too much for them. Tip: to have the public bath all to yourself, go for about 11pm - I know it's late, but the late night soak really helps to drift off.

A Great Traditional Stay in Tokyo

Location Close to Imperial Grounds, Shopping Arcade, Nice Onsen Facility, Staff Is Helpful and Loves to Share Tradition
Staff went out of there way to help us in a few ways and treated us to a morning tea ceremony. Cannot beat that kind of hospitality.

Highlight of our trip to Japan

Genuine Japanese experience; Proximity to Japan Rail; Close to excellent restaurants; Cabs arrived within minutes of request; English speaking
We enjoyed this hotel more than the other five star hotels we stayed in during our first trip to Japan. We had difficulty connecting with our scheduled tour company. The front desk staff made calls for us and facilitated our travel to the correct hotel to meet our tour group. The room was immaculate, simple Japanese decor with tea and sweets. I was hesitant to have a Japanese breakfast but didn't order the western breakfast. I was pleasantly surprised - I loved the diverse foods presented in individual small portions, that collectively were more than a hearty meal. We only stayed one night due to plans in Tokoyo. I wished we had planned to stay longer so plan on returning in the summer to spend a week in Kyoto.

A good experience at the Ryokan

room, public bath and helpful hoteliers
This is a very good Ryokan to stay at when you visit Kyoto. The ambiance and food is very homey. It has a very good public bath area for hotel guests. The hoteliers are very helpful and friendly!

Traditional look and feel

Helpful staff, good english speaking and extra performance for guests
Spacious and fully traditional feel, we always bought convenience store food and the staff helpfully warmed it up at their kitchen for us. The lady insisted that we stay for a few minutes after checking out to witness her tea ceremony performance and treated us some cakes and green tea.

just a Ryokan experience

Ryokan style
This hotel is near to subway, after exit 9 turn right, walk 5 - 10 mins. However it's a bit far from bus stop and especially if you are first time there, it could be confusing. There is no tea ceremony during my stay. Not sure if it was because i checked in at 5 pm and check out at 9am. if you want to have Ryokan experience, you can choose this otherwise there are many hotels have better location with comparable price.

Helpful and Caring Hotel in Kyoto

Location advantages; Friendly and helpful staff; Japanese Traditional and Cultural performances!
I enjoyed a lot staying at the Nishiyama Ryokan because of the Japanese style treatments of guests and caring of guests' needs. It is a bonus to have rental bicycle, tea enlightenment performance and Japanese traditional singing. In addition, there are some unique and stylish restaurants around providing different kinds of meals for tourists from classic Japanese meal to contemporary cruisine, Spanish, Italiano, French, etc... Those restaurants are small and full of suprise in quality of foods or creativity of dishes.
