Historic City Center

The historic center of Mexico City is focused on the Zócalo, the second-largest square in the world after Moscow’s Red Square and a venue for popular cultural events. Adjoining the square is the National Palace and the offices of the President of Mexico. Built on the ruins of Moctezuma II’s palace, the National Palace uses the same tezontle stone. In fact, most of the buildings in the City Center are built with the rubble of the destroyed Aztec city, including architectural treasures like the Metropolitan Cathedral, constructed over the course of three centuries.

The best way to see the Historic City Center is on foot as many of the streets have recently been pedestrianized. Tolsá Plaza is home to the National Museum of Art. One of the most beautiful buildings in the Historical Centre, it houses a collection representing the history of Mexican art from the late pre-Hispanic era to the early 20th century. Nearby is the wonderful Palace of Fine Arts, one of the most magnificent concert halls in the world. Alameda Central was once an Aztec marketplace and features green gardens with paved paths and decorative fountains. The first skyscraper in the city, The Latin-American Tower, offers spectacular views of the entire city. The area offers a wealth of upscale eateries, bars and fashionable stores. Restaurants such as the Tacuba Café serve exquisite traditional Mexican dishes and are decorated with beautiful Talavera mosaics.
