It was a bit of a hike to central downtown but with all the sights along the way, we found it worth it. There is so much to do, museums, planetarium, Soldier Field and park system within a few blocks. Excellent restaurants within a couple of blocks and a great little wine bar around the corner. The free Tram system was a great feature as well and it came right into the hotel's area. The El was about 2 blocks away and Union Station cost $10 for a cab. The cafe next door was very handy and reasonable.
The Best Western Grant Park is a terrific value! The staff were great, the rooms clean and the bed was fantastic!
No cons - we got exactly what we expected, a comfortable place to sleep and good value!
- Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : It seemed that anyone we asked for directions thought we should take transit or a cab. WALK, there is so many amazing things to see in Chicago that you would miss in the back of a cab!

The staff was the highlight. Maisha, the front desk person, was most helpful - even before we arrived - and remembered my name and specifics when I called the morning of. She volunteered that my room was ready for me - at 8:00 am - much to my surprise! The staff was friendly and helpful - even after I suffered a rather severe cut on my foot in their room.
The rooms were nothing special - the couch was tattered - the amenities out-dated; but the proximity to the park and the loop was worth the trade-off.
The rooms do not have Wi-fi - making computer access inconvenient...although they did provide two pc's in the lobby for public use.
Overall - we tremendously enjoyed our stay - mostly because of the amazing timing of being in Chicago - on the lake front - the night Barack Obama was elected!!
Near Grant Park, close to downtown Chicago
Needs updating
- Hotel Feature Tip : You are walking distance from the Lake shore, and downtown. This is a great location and a nice view.

Before we arrived at the hotel I double-checked with agoda if there will be any tax to be charged from the hotel. I got a confirmation that charges is included in hotel tax. One day before arrival I called the hotel directly to check if my reservation was known and if we had two beds as the meaning of double bed was unsure to me. The hotel confirmed my reservation and that two beds were in the room. On our arrival we have been greeted and checked in. The room was pretty small but we didn't want to stay in the room the whole day anyway. When asking how to get to Oakbrook mall or Stratford mall we have been told to go by cab as it was not possible to go by train or bus. We trusted the info and paid 50 usd to get to the first mall. When we wanted to go the the other mall we paid another 40 usd and found out later that there was a bus going to a Metra-station where a train was going to down-town Chicago....you can imagine we were quite unhappy with the info the hotel provided. Also when we asked for coin laundry they could not give any info., when asking how much a cab to airport would be they couldn't answer. What kind of a hotel is this?? For me these are standard questions which should be answered with ease. The nice thing was free Internet but that's about it. The location on south Michigan is pretty good if you want to go shopping on State street or north Michigan. State street is better for shopping. ask for special visitor card at Macy's and Bloomingdales so you can save 11% tax except for cosmetics and other selected items.
You can reach the hotel with CTA but you have to do one transfer and walk appr. 5 minutes; bus station is in front of hotel; near park; near water; near aquarium and planetarium; a couple of museums are nearby too; free Internet.
No fridge in room; pretty loud if neighbor is taking a shower or going to the loo; air condition is always running even if it's off and if you cover the air condition with the bed sheet it starts to smell; staff could be more friendly and more informed about general questions.
- Shopping Tip : State street and North Michigan avenue; Oakbrook mall or Stratford mall which are outside in the suburbs but worth seeing; Wicker park is also nice (Marc by Marc Jacobs store!)
