Hawaii (HI)
Every bit as good as tourists are led to believe, Hawaii is the kind of island paradise that can leave a person wondering where the downside is. Between its white-sand beaches, lavish resorts and fertile rainforests, Hawaii manages to excel at everything it attempts. Some come for the high-life, others for the outdoors and surfing. Whatever the motivation, this is a destination that knows just what its visitors need.
Of the eight islands in the Hawaiian archipelago, six are open to tourists. Reigning over all of them is the island of Oahu with state capital Honolulu and some of the finest accommodation in Hawaii. As the only 'big city' in an archipelago known for its small towns and resorts, Honolulu teems with cultural attractions, chic shopping centers and booming night clubs. Locals love to berate Honolulu for its commercialism, but they also love to live there. Eighty percent of the state's residents are on this island, and most of that figure resides in Honolulu.
Honolulu International Airport is the gateway to the islands, with most visitors at least touching down before dispersing. Each of the islands has its own reputation: Maui boasts the most polished resorts; the Big Island has an active volcano, historic sites and excellent snorkeling; and Kauai is known for natural wonders that include a scaled-down 'Grand Canyon' and the fluted, emerald cliffs of the Na Pali coastline.
Hotels across Hawaii are available in a variety of locations and budgets. Some are tucked into inland rainforests; others have their own slice of white sand. It's even possible to book accommodation on pineapple orchards or Kona coffee plantations. Early bookings are advised if visiting during the December-January high season.
