Downtown Los Angeles
Los Angeles sprawls across a huge swathe of Southern California, and its 'city center' is no longer at the geographical heart of the area. Even so, a lively business atmosphere persists here, and there are many business hotels in the city center close to the soaring Bank of America building.
Los Angeles is a relatively young city, but some of its oldest landmarks are here in the city center. These include the city hall, which was built in the 1920s and stands nearly 30 stories tall. Take the elevator to the observation deck on the top floor for a sweeping view of this sprawling metropolis.
Near to the city hall is Walt Disney Concert Hall. Designed by Frank Gehry and funded by the Disney Corporation, this masterpiece of modern architecture is the centerpiece of a revitalization project in downtown Los Angeles. The concert hall hosts the Los Angeles Philharmonic and champions state-of-the-art acoustics. Another recent addition to the downtown district is the Cathedral of our Lady of the Angels, which was opened in 2002 as the third-largest cathedral in the world.
While tourists flock to the beach hotels at Santa Monica, Malibu and Venice, business and convention travelers are much more likely to book accommodation in the city center. Lately, tourists have been taking an increased interest in this area due to the revitalization projects. Visitors can connect to Hollywood and Universal Studios on the metro, but getting to any of the beaches still requires a ride, whether that’s on a bus or in a rental car.
