Quirky hotel with comfortable rooms

the standard was perfect for my two-night stay in los angeles. the downtown location was convenient for bus and subway lines, and there were plenty of eating and drinking options nearby. as it was, i kept quiet in my room, raiding the awesome minibar and ordering excellent food from the 24-hour restaurant. the standard staff were unfailingly helpful and cheerful. if i'd been feeling more extroverted i would have taken advantage of the rooftop pool bar or the billiard table in the lobby.
Restaurant Tip:
Take the short walk to the nearby Nickel Diner for fantastic healthy food and warm atmosphere.

the room was huge in size and had all the requisite necessities, but the carpet needs some serious updating. the bed is just average. the bathroom is very nice and spacious, though could use a door that closed.
Nightlife Tip:
Free rooftop access is definitely a nice perk.

The Standard is a great hotel, with minimalist and large rooms (all conveniences included), it has an awesome rooftop bar from where you see the L.A. skyline. One strange thing: the shower is a glass room (meaning the wall is actually made of see-through glass) so you can see your partner having a shower!! Not a great idea to stay here if you share with a friend unless you book a twin room.
Restaurant Tip:
Don't eat at the Standard, the menu is quite poor and overpriced. Not very good catering for people with special diets either. Bottega Loui is a one-minute walk from the hotel and is one of the most popular places to eat downtown (so popular they dont take reservations!). Great menu, great service and great prices. We went back 4 times! (and we're very picky when it comes to good food!)

You'll be happy with this hotel if you have the correct expectations.
The room rates can be decent and the location (downtown) is nice if you're happy to be based downtown.
However, service is pretty bad. If you plan ahead and minimise involvement with the service staff, you'll be ok. E.g. don't expect them to help you move your bags from one room to another. Don't expect them to even help you with getting new glasses for your room after hours.
The rooms themselves are very comfortable and quite large but prob not the best for sharing with a friend (showers are exposed)
I'd stay here again.
Hotel Feature Tip:
Valet parking was $32 when I stayed here (end 2010) but there's a car park at the back entrance where the maximum per day is $22 and you don't need to wait for the valet.
