Hotels in the Times Square area provide fantastic access to Manhattan’s many attractions. One Times Square was originally the second-tallest building in the world when it opened in 1905. Today, it is best known as the home of the annual New Year’s Eve ball drop. Early-bird visitors can join the audience of Good Morning America at ABC Times Square Studios.
A short walk away, Carnegie Hall is one of the most prestigious venues in the world for classical and popular music. "The World's Largest Store", Macy’s, covers an entire city block. The area offers a diverse range of museums, from the New York City Police Museum and Museum of American Finance to the Museum of Jewish Heritage and the National Museum of the American Indian. The Skyscraper Museum tells the epic story of the city’s construction.
Times Square has its share of chain restaurants, but there are a number of superior dining options away from Times Square proper. The area is most enchanting at night, when its many screens are ablaze with color. The Times Square Information Center on 7th Avenue (between 46th and 47th Streets) has multilingual tourist counselors, free maps and brochures, tickets for Broadway shows and sightseeing tours. Also on 47th Street, the TKTS Booth sells discounted tickets for Broadway and off-Broadway shows. A glass staircase at the back of the booth offers an excellent vantage point to watch the crowds and flashing signs.
The Times Square-42nd St. subway station is one of the major public transit hubs, and the main long distance bus station (the Port Authority Bus Terminal) is a short walk away. While walking is regarded as the best way to see the rest of the city, taxis are available from Times Square day and night.
