New York Palace Hotel New York (NY) Info
A certified New York institution, this property comprises the six restored Renaissance-style townhouses known as the Villard Houses. Occupying a stately position on Madison Avenue between 50 and 51st Streets, the New York Palace Hotel is every bit the luxury establishment. Located opposite and enjoying views of the neo-Gothic St. Patrick's Cathedral, this hotel sees more than its share of dignitaries, socialites and celebrities, with a courtyard made famous by Gossip Girl. Common spaces in the townhouses are beyond opulent, with heavy gilding, vaulted ceilings and Romanesque objets d'art, while rooms in the tower building are classic New York contemporary and comfortable, some with city views. Rockefeller Center, Central Park, Broadway's theaters and the shops along Fifth Avenue are all within walking distance.

Excellent customer service at every turn, extremely knowledgeable and helpful concierge staff, very personable waitstaff at the Gilt bar, amazing views... Pretty much anything about any hotel you can think of that might possibly be disappointing was mind-blowingly awesome at The Palace
Initially I had reserved a basic room for two nights and was excited enough about just being able to stay at The New York Palace during my vacation in the city. When I arrived, however, they had upgraded me to a suite in the Towers at no additional charge because I had requested a smoking room and there were none currently available in the less swanky (though still incredible) areas of the hotel. Every member of their staff with whom I had the pleasure of interacting was extremely courteous, obliging, and knowledgeable - one concierge was even patient and kind enough to talk me through (over the phone, when my reception was bad) getting to Chelsea on the subway when I accidentally ended up going from downtown Manhattan all the way out to Coney Island, and he did so with a friendly smile detectable in his voice the entire time. I would recommend a stay of any length at the New York Palace to anyone who plans to be in New York City, but just know up front that it will break your heart when you have to leave.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Before I arrived, I had no clue that The Palace was within (short) walking distance to Rockefeller Center, Radio City Music Hall, Central Park, Saks Fifth Avenue, and seemingly anything else you would ever care to see in Manhattan.

The rooms were large and very well appointed (we were in the towers). The staff was eager to help in any way and were always prompt and courtious.
Room service was very expensive - even for New York.
People knew who we were and greeted us personally, though it was our first visit. Every person (except one) was cheerful and helpful, no matter what their job. The one : Ice is not available except by calling for it (that's nice since no one has to be by a loud ice machine. But we had to call for ice and the guy shamelessly hung around to be tipped for it. My husband wasn't tipping for ice and there was this awkward standoff... The rooms and their views were great. The price was high for us - but we expected it and planned for it. Everything was clean and beautiful.
Travel tip : There is no lobby coffee (or they pick it up before 6am), but a Starbucks is across the street. Also, a fine deli next door so you can get snacks/lunch without room service.
