Excellent location, friendly, welcoming staff. Clean, quiet room.

Can be quite a queue to check in on Fridays.

Two girlfriends and I recently stayed at the Waldorf Astoria (w/end 18-20 Sept 09)and we were pleasantly surprised at how friendly and accommodating such a large hotel was. On arrival at our room we were greeted with a telephone call to see if there was any additional information required; restaurant suggestions/bookings, supermarket locations, etc. and after requesting a later check-out, were informed we could leave at 1pm instead of the standard 12pm experienced at most other hotels. The room itself was rather spacious by Midtown New York standards and as we had requested an upper floor room, very quiet. Regarding hotel facilities, we only experienced the Bull and Bear bar which frankly could use a warmer reception (bar staff were especially terse for some reason - don't expect a smile) but produced two, rather well made Cosmopolitans. Prices were what can be expected of such establishments however as there was no bar menu it may come as a surprise to some when the bill arrives. The Concierge desk was very well informed and provided some interesting suggestions for evening entertainment (ask them to add you to any guest lists for popular clubs/bars). Overall the quality and standard of public areas was excellent and the hotel generally well staffed. We also felt very safe, although as we were staying at the beginning of the UN Summit on climate change, with Mr Obama staying at the hotel along with other UN dignitaries, we rather felt this may have had a little to do with it. (The Secret Service discreetly made their presence known.) Would highly recommend staying at the Waldorf to any new to New York City. Its location, close to Central Park, 5th and Madison Avenues, Radio City Music Hall, Rockerfeller Centre and walking distance of the Empire State building (approx. 20 mins) is a real boon to those who prefer not to use the subway.

Nightlife Tip : Whiskey Blue - bar situated at the W Hotel directly behind was nice for a nightcap. Comfort Diner for brunch, highly recommended - try the french toast.

Fabulous entrance hall / reception area. Nice cocktail bar. Bull and Bear restaurant was very nice - but very expensive - we arrived late so only ordered an appetiser - steak on steak, this was as big as a full meal, and luckily very good value, steak, tomatoes, greens, fried onions and feta cheese, $29. Was best bargain of the stay!!!

Mmmm, room wasn't as glamourous as I'd have expected, but it was clean. Many rooms have no safe and you have to use deposit boxes near reception. The prices were crazy. $40+ for 2 single drinks in the bars. No tea and coffee facilities in room, and at that price you would expect that little comfort.

We wanted to stay here as this was the place to stay if in New York, so now we can say we've done it. but look at the cons, and you'll see the main creature comforts, i.e. a drink in the bar, tea in the room etc were not met. They say its the city that never sleeps and neither could we with all the sirens every night, all night - better double glazing would be a requirement here. If I went back I'd choose a 4/5 star hotel just on the outskirts and enjoy lower prices - if you use the underground, its quick to everywhere... It was a good experience, but I'd suggest popping in for one cocktail to enjoy this hotel, rather than staying there. All staff were polite and very officious, not really friendly.

Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Rather than q for Empire State Building, go up Rockerfeller tower, same view, less q, less cost!
