I have stayed at a lot of hostels and cheap hotels all around the world and Vanderbilt is definitely one of the nicer ones in that category. Sure, the rooms are a little rundown. But as far as cheap hostel-ish hotels go, it is cleaner and quieter than many.
Clean and low cost.
Shared bathrooms, unfriendly staff and my TV didn't work.
- Hotel Feature Tip : They have free WiFi internet - you just get a password from the desk to login. Or you can go around the corner to the Kinko's on Lexington, where you can use the (slightly expensive) internet and a printer.

One day would have been fine to visit the nearby United Nations but we dreaded going back to our room at night and tried to use the bathroom facilities at odd hours to avoid the mostly unfriendly female travellers.
- Hotel Feature Tip : If you suffer from claustrophobia do not stay here!

Functional, not fancy. Very international crowd. Young, but I did not feel out of place as a 64 year old American male.
- Restaurant Tip : Many small, inexpensive restaurants near hotel like $7 for Japanese meal.
