Nob Hill

Nob Hill’s name and privileged reputation dates back to the Gold Rush, when the construction of cable car lines made the hilltop an attractive new neighborhood for the city’s tycoons, or 'Nabobs'. Many of these original mansions have since become luxury hotels standing at the top of the hill.

Dotted with vintage barber shops, cozy cafes and cocktail lounges, some parts of the neighborhood feel frozen in time. Grace Cathedral is a popular local landmark, as is the 'Fountain of Tortoises' at the center of Huntington Park. The Cable Car Museum and the Lumiere Theatre are also well worth a visit.

Further away from Huntington Square, Chinese temples and shops spill over from Chinatown, and upscale boutiques appear towards Union Square. In an area bordering the Tenderloin known as the ‘Tender Nob’ hipster shops and bars can be found, while nightclubs and bars line the boundary with Polk Street.

The hilly area can be a challenge to visitors on foot, or in a vehicle, for that matter. Referred to as the 'crookedest street in the world', Lombard Street (between Hyde and Leavenworth) contains eight hairpin turns. At a 31.5% gradient, nearby Filbert Street is one of the steepest streets in the entire Western Hemisphere. With steps along the sidewalk, it also has its own special set of parking rules and makes a unique – if challenging – touristic spot for travelers.
