Excellent atmosphere

Ambience, the out-door hot spring, staff
It definitely exceeded my expectations! We were in for a surprise with the absolutely stunning and romantic outdoor hot spring. It was perfect for the snowy night to soak with snowflakes tingling on you. Would definitely recommend this place.

Very interesting onsen town stay

Lovely indoor and outdoor onsens, wonderful food.
The building is a fabulous old-style lodging, but rooms tend a little to 70's chic. There was slight confusion on arrival, so our check in was delayed. However the warm hosts welcomed us and we were soon settled in. Shibu Onsen is not a wild night out, particularly in feb, but dinner was quite spectacular almost keisei style, as was breakfast. I do recommend going half board. They are well located both for all the public onsen and visiting the snow monkeys. Travel is very easy and well assisted with volunteers- if you can manage a Shinkansen you can manage to get to shibu! Plus on departure we received an origami yoda- awesome!
Travel tip: Although near to the snow monkeys, the walk is significant, even once you reach the monkey park. If travelling in winter ensure you have warm layers- despite multiple heaters and their best efforts, it was a bit chilly until you got into bed!

So beautiful.

The onsens, the staff.
Aww - I have great memories of this place. It is a little difficult to find at first, but the town is so small, you'll find it eventually. The English is limited, but you can easily get by with the tiniest knowledge of Japanese pleasantries and 'international sign language'. The owners and staff are elderly but soooo warm and welcoming. They showed us how to do everything with regards to the onsens, the robes, etc. The room was INCREDIBLY cold at first (January in the mountains). We finally figured out how to work the heater... The onsens are male/female, and you can reserve the outdoor one for your family. Absolutely perfect and beautiful. We skied one day (Shiga Kogen) and visited the Monkey Park another day. We were there during the New Year holiday, which is really quiet in Japan and lasts until around January 4. I would recommend this onsen to anyone and hope to return there during the winter some time soon. FYI I believe all the toilets are shared. I dont think there are any en suite showers.. you shower outside near the onsen.

Les bains, l'emplacement
Vieil Hotel de type Ryokan/Onsen. Environ 400ans.
