Classic prewar hotel, hopeless internet

Prime location, stylish furnishings, moderate price
8.7
This is one of a row of hotels on the part of West Nanjing Road that forms the north side of People's Square, and it is immediately opposite an entrance to a Metro station serving three Metro lines. Easy to get to Pudong, Jinan, French Concession, old city, both airports, etc. Walking distance from the major museums. No need to rely on taxis (here in mid-Puxi where there is sometimes a shortage of them). Also around the corner from a great food street, Huang He Lu, several blocks of good cheap restaurants and street vendors. I assume the pricing of this hotel will always suffer from being next door to the Radisson, which is fine with me, and personally i would much rather stay at Pacific Hotel because of the very tasteful old furnishings and interiors, lots of wood and stone. (The lobby smelled strongly of aftershave, and that was a little weird.) -- My room on the seventh floor had a balcony, but unfortunately it was locked. The only drawback to the location is that the area of People's Square immediately opposite is used sometimes by a group of old Communists who come out and sing revolutionary songs off-key in a kind of open-air karaoke. They're not all that loud and it adds a spot of local color, but it can get old. I was here both for business and (at end of stay) for a family vacation, and the room was suitable for both purposes. Would not have hesitated to schedule a meeting here. Service was attentive, English at the desk was high-quality, housekeeping was friendly and thorough. The bar was a nice place and not totally deserted. A bit overpriced. (I didn't eat at the Pacific Hotel but this website requires a number. You can't argue with Javascript, thus a completely meaningless 3.) While I was here I suffered from a terrible internet connection that caused me to waste hours of my time. My VPN connection was seldom good for more than a few seconds. I didn't bother asking for help, because I believe it was a provider problem.

Need to work on internet service

Prime location, vintage style, comparatively inexpensive

Users of this website should be informed that the hotel's name in Chinese is Jin Men Da Jiu Dian, and it's kind of dumb that that information is not very prominently displayed for users of this booking service. Pacific/Jin Men is on N side of People's Square, opposite an entrance to a Metro station serving three Metro lines. Easy to get anywhere from here. No need to rely on taxis (of which there is often a shortage). Around the corner is a food street, Huang He Lu, plenty of good cheap restaurants and street vendors. I assume the pricing of this hotel will always suffer from being next door to the big shiny Radisson; I would rather stay at Pacific Hotel anyhow. One drawback to the location: the part of People's Square immediately opposite is used sometimes by a group of old Communists who come out and sing revolutionary songs off-key in a kind of open-air karaoke. I was here both for business and (at end of stay) for a family vacation, and the room was suitable for both purposes. Service was attentive, English at the desk was high-quality, housekeeping was friendly and thorough. The porters could have been a bit more accommodating about storing bags on my last day, but the reception desk saw to my needs. The bar was a nice, albeit overpriced. (I didn't eat at the Pacific Hotel but this website requires a number. You can't argue with Javascript, thus I have submitted a meaningless 3.) While I was here I suffered from a terrible internet connection that cost me hours of my time. I didn't bother asking for help from the hotel staff, because I believe it was a provider problem.

Very good location, only 5 minutes walk to Nanjing Road and you can see he hotel when you get out of the metro station. The building is historied and it matches your imagination of old Shanghai! The room was clean and big although it's a little bit old. Very good value of money and highly recommend this hotel!!!
