Location of hotel is great, it's just 5 mins walk from the pier and close to most shopping area and restaurants. The pool is small, but if you will go to Great Barrier Reef, the pool is meaningless for you. Location of hotel is great, it's just 5 mins walk from the pier. Only three hotels are that close to the pier (Shangri-La, Hilton, Mantra Esplanade), when compare with price, this is the best, especially if you want to have great fun in Great Barrier Reef (usually you have to wake up early to join the trip to Great Barrier Reef - gather point in pier) but don't have too HIGH expection on the view (I guess it's better for sea view, mine one is city view). Most of the shopping area and restaurants are in explanade road and abott road, so it's also very convenience. Please beware not to mix up mantra esplanade and mantra trilogy, they are two different hotels. I'm commenting about mantra esplanade.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Shopping area are mainly located in Abott road, which is next to Esplanade Road.
Most of the restaurant are located in Esplanade Road.
If you join local tour to forest / balloning or other things, shuttle bus fares usually are free of charges, therefore no need to consider the location of hotel.
BUT if you join local tour to Great Barrier Reef, it will cost you extra cost for shuttle bus to pick you to pier, you can walk to pier for gathering without extra cost, so better choose one hotel near the pier.

If you want to book tours/outings the reception staff are very helpful. For the rainforest/sky rail the coach collects you from your hotel and it is a five minute walk to the pier for reef trips.
Travel tip : Having said that the hotel does not have its own cafe/restaurant, there is an independent restaurant in the hotel. It offers good food in comfort at a reasonable price - about $50 per head.
