For those on the long overland trip from Cairns to Cape York, a stopover in Cook town is obligatory, and well worth it. The Sovereign Resort was originally built in 1874, and today this historical building on the port end of Charlotte Street, has been transformed into a resort-style hotel, offering well-appointed accommodation with modern amenities, and the warm, genuine hospitality unique to rural Australia. The tastefully decorated rooms are all exceptionally spacious, and furnished in a minimalist style, with quality linen, large flat screen televisions, and queen size beds. Cooktown itself is the gateway to the Cape York Peninsular, and the surrounding area is tropical Australia at its best. Situated on the mouth of the Endeavour River, it was in this protected harbour that Captain James Cook limped into shore and set about repairing his ship, The Endevour, before claiming the entire coast for Britain and beginning his return voyage.
