The hotel is centrally located, with a friendly and efficient staff. If you're coming in or going out of town the central train/coach station is within a fifteen minute walk from the hotel. The hotel restaurant provides a very nice, varied, quite sophisticated menu. A snack menu is also available that offers very substantial fare.
Reception and rooms are quite adequate and are at the time of writing this review, be fairly extensively modernized.
The hotel is beginning to show its age but to no great deteriment to cleanliness or service.
Within the city proper Geelong does not boast an awful lot of attactions but what there are can be found within a few minutes walk of the hotel. The biggest, really pleasant surprise was the national wool museum. When I first saw the name of the museum I thought it sounds like one of those places you take school kids for an educational day out. While there is a kids gallery there is much, much mor to this museum including the history of the industry in Australia, operational looms and demonsrations of their operation, wool processing, wool weaving and the econmic impact of the industry on the country.
Shopping Tip : A number of arcades and substantial number of restaurant also allow for an enjoyable afternoon stroll around the town.

Overnight car parking charge excessive
Hotel is OK but a bit tired. Reception area spruced up. Room spacious but bathroom needed some work particularly - broken tiles, toilet requiring a couple of knocks to stop running. Could hear every time neighbouring rooms used bathroom. Excessive charge for overnight car parking in an area not undercover and open to the street. Reception slow both on checking in and out, and could be a bit more friendly. Overall just OK.
Restaurant Tip : Out of hotel along Myer St to right, at traffic lights to right and across the road a decent pasta/pizza restaurant.

Quiet, clean and reasonably central.
Overnight car parking charges!
The Mercure Hotel Geelong provided a very useful first night base before driving the Great Ocean Road. It is a convenient shuttle bus ride from Avalon Airport and a ten minute walk from car rental depots. Downtown Geelong is also only a short walk away. The room was quiet and confortable and of the high standard expected of the Mercure chain. Note that on site parking incurs an unwelcome fee.
Shopping Tip : Exploring the surrounding area will reveal some quirky and interesting shops.
