Centrally located and very close to train station and airport transportation; staff were helpful and welcoming; clean and good value
Some of the rooms have very little natural light or air; try not to book room 102, which has only 1/2 window opening directly on to the next buildings vent, about 2 ft away; location is both a plus and minus as downtown area had lots of construction which was quite noisy
I had booked four days at the Alto. When I arrived, I was in room 102, a hotel-style room that was very dark and small (described above), and had a very strong smell of air freshener and no way to get fresh air. I asked to be moved and the staff was able to give me an upgrade the following day. If I had had to stay in the first room for four days, I would have tried to change hotels. My second room was much better, though it's window still opened almost directly on the building next door. Location is terrific and staff is wonderful, so I recommend the hotel. (Also I did not try the food, so can't really rate that)

Modern rooms, very clean, front desk staff, coffee machine, wireless internet.
common throughout Australia, but I still dislike paying for internet and local phone calls.
The Alto Hotel on Bourke was an excellent find. It was my first time in Australia, and the location of this hotel was fantastic as it was easy to navigate to, close to public transport of all kinds, minutes walk from great shopping and restaurants, and staffed with friendly, knowledgeable people. The breakfast located in the hotel was also very good, the quality of food was well worth the price. Also, the coffee machine was a very nice perk that we really missed when we left the hotel. All in all I would definitely return the Alto hotel if I'm lucky enough to find myself in Melbourne again!
Restaurant Tip : If you're in Melbourne you should definitely head over to Degraves lane… it's a narrow alley that is packed with small cafes and restaurants and is a great place for breakfast!

I originally planned only to stay 1 night but ending up staying 7! I will be staying here again. Nothing was too hard for the professional staff. eg I needed to find an all night chemist in a hurry and the reception staff searched on the net until he found the closest one to the hotel (in Prahan.
