Sydney City

Sydney City Center is the financial hub of the city, and is most commonly referred to by locals as the CBD – the Central Business District. The City Center's main transport interchange is Town Hall train station, located underneath the 19th-century Town Hall building – a major Sydney landmark and a common meeting place. Adjacent to the Town Hall is the historic Queen Victoria Building – the QVB – an up-market shopping center.

Other major points of interest within the Sydney CBD are Martin Place, a pedestrian-only street that houses the National Reserve Bank and other major financial headquarters; Wynyard, a major transport hub for rail and bus commuters crossing to North Sydney; and Macquarie Street, home to high-profile businesses, embassies, consulates and Sydney's Parliament House.

While the City Center itself is business-oriented, there are many hotels in Sydney CBD and travelers staying here will find themselves strategically placed to visit the surrounding tourist spots of Darling Harbour, Circular Quay and Chinatown. The CBD is relatively compact and CBD hotels are geared towards business travelers, with executive services and proximity to transport and businesses paramount. Buses, trains and cabs all converge in the CBD but it's possible – and worthwhile – to walk to Darling Harbour, Hyde Park and Circular Quay. Sydney's main rail terminus, Central Station, is also within easy walking distance.

Sydney City Center's chief tourist drawcards are its high-end shopping, its fine dining restaurants and its lively café culture. Famous restaurants include Testuya's and Est, while World Square, the QVB, Pitt Street Mall and Centrepoint are the main shopping malls.

One prolific attraction in Sydney City Center is the 305-meter Sydney Tower above Centrepoint (commonly referred to as Centrepoint Tower). The highest point in Sydney, the tower's observation deck features a revolving restaurant and an open air viewing platform. Views from Sydney Tower are unparalleled.
