Location is extremely convenient and within walking distanc of chinatown and Paddy's market
Small rooms and room service and housekeeping were not all that great. Parking not included.
Stayed here for 3 nights. Found the location very good, a short walk from Central station and right at a bus hub with direct buses all the way to Bondi and most other tourist destinations. Dining was convenient as well til 2-3 am in the morning due to its proximity to Chinatown. Main grouse was the housekeeping was a little slow. Rooms were pretty standard, not much to shout about, I reckon its more like 3 star standard.

A 10-minute walk from the Sydney Central Station, a 20-minute walk from the most interesting places in the city, 20-30 minutes from the airport by train or shuttle bus.
A feeling that you are in a fast food hotel - it's not bad and the service is decent, but you can't feel anything addressed personally to you. Paid expensive internet in hotels should be a thing of the past and wireless in all rooms should be a standard, but it's not in this hotel.
I came to Sydney for 3 nights and I had chosen the Mercure hotel the combination of good location and a decent price. I don't regret my choice, even though not everything in this hotel was so perfect as in Novetel Perth, where I was the previous night, even though the two hotels have the same owner - Accor. In the evening I was given a smoking room, even though I had expressly required a non-smoking one (by the way, I thought in all civilized countries smoking in hotels is thing of the past, but in Australia people still smoke much more than in the UK for example) and on the next day they changed it for me with a non-smoking room, but on the top floor, where the room was really cold (outside temperatures were normal - like around 10 degrees in the night and 20+ in daytime) and even the air-conditioning didn't help that much. The systems with the "minibars" in the corridors gave me that fast-food hotel feeling and reminded me very much of an American motel, only that here you don't directly pay on the vending machines, but only identify yourself with the room card and get billed at check-out. Adding to that feeling were the soap and shampoo dispensers in the bathroom of my first room - strangely the second was offering the more hospitable individually packed hotel soaps and shampoos. Apart from that, the hotel was clean and nice and I felt well there.
Hotel Feature Tip : 1. If it's raining (and it was when I was coming) it's good to know that you can get from the central train station (if you are coming with the train from the airport) to the hotel through an underground tunnel. Just follow the signs for Devonshire street and George Street and you'll get directly to the plaza in front of the hotel.
2. It's actually cheaper to take a shuttle bus from the airport than the train (12.00 compared to 14.60 AUD), even though it's only 4 train stops, they have massive airport surcharges - actually the highest I have seen anywhere in the world.
3. If you don't feel like 22 AUD a day for the hotel internet, you can go with your laptop to the McDonald's restaurant across the street and use theirs for free or if you want something better - there is a Everywhere Internet location 100 meters to the right of McDonalds - a great place with fast internet (having locations across Australia in which you can use the same account and credits) where you can use their PCs or connect your laptop via the wireless network. Otherwise free wireless internet in Sydney is a rare bird.

Treated rudely by a member of hotel staff
I have stayed at this hotel before, and so knew what to expect. However I did not expect to return to my room one evening to find that housekeeing had turned down the airconditioning to near-sub zero temperatures. This in itself was annoying, however it was the manner of the night receptionist when I called to notify them of the situation and request that housekeeping were made aware that they should not change the aircon settings the following day. A slight level of concern and apology would have been appreciated, however what I received was rudeness and dismissal- Not very satisfactory. this alone will make me rethink my accomodation the next time I take a trip to Sydney.
