Disappointing, cost not proportional to experience

Standard of room not in line with cost. Clock no battery, reading lamps too dim to read by, no view, no balcony . Automatic type greeting of "Welcome to the Princess Gate hotel" without feeling. Hunt for towels in spa area which was flooded and not clean at the time...did get cleaned next day. Walk through dining room in bath robe to access spa....gentleman who showed us felt the other way was too round-a-bout to bother showing us. His air was one of resignation not one of willingness. Owner did promptly respond to feedback with a few things to say eg. that the broken wicker chairs and other refurbishments being under taken and to visit again in the future. If the experience was not optimal, as the owner of a business, there is the option to compensate for that shortcoming in some way. Not in this case....as yet....here is to optimism!

We were a bit disappointed when we found our room was not in the main building. It is in an extension building adjacent to the main heritage buidling. The furniture is quite dated and does not give you any luxurious feeling as what we saw in the hotel's photos on their web. We understand it is an old building but the condition of the room was really far below our expectation as a 5 star hotel. It is more like a 3 star motel with old sofa and plastic shower curtain. The bedroom is quite small but it has a kitchen which is a bonus. We stayed there two nights. On the second day they only gave us fresh towels but did not clean the bathroom floor at all. The cleaner also took our own towel as a mistake. We reported to the reception immediately when we found out our own towel was missing and they said they will check with the cleaner but we did not hear anything from them about it after that. We had to buy another towel in our next destination. We understand our towel is quite similar to theirs. It is not a bit deal but it is just feeling awkward this happened in a 5 star hotel and it seemed the staff just totally forgot about it. Breakfast and dinner are very nice in the hotel. The service in the restaurant is quite good as well.

Historic hotel but old furnitures

Overall I like the hotel, it has a long history, the building is one of the best colonial historic sites to visit. But old hotels always have the cons that their decorations and furnitures are just too old. If u don't concern about this, this hotel is still a very good choice, it's close to a lot of eateries and also the convention center.

I have stayed at the Princes Gate hotel twice now. I go to Rotorua because I because I want to stay there. I love the style of the old place...very Downton Abbey. The service and attentiveness of the staff is second to none from the moment you are greeted at the door. Enjoy the experience of the hotel then enjoy Rotorua
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip:
The museum, within a 5 min walk from Princes Gate, is great. The history on the area and the building is displayed brilliantly.

I am all about location - this hotel is a block away from the bus stop, the informative I tourist help center, the Rotorua Museum, and moments away from the lake. The only negative which wouldn't have happened if I didn't make 2 separate Agoda bookings was that both the housekeeper and plumber didn't get the memo I had extended my stay and both walked in on me as I was trying to get ready for the day. I was bummed too that thre was no wifi option.
