I loved my stay at the Tongariro Chateau. We went there after a tramp through the Tongariro. The hot chocolate was the best I ever had!!

Nice hotel, but very dated and dark pool in the basement. Hotel is certainly worthwhile for the area, but believe winter time is more suitable as castle fits more cold atmosphere. Small bed and no airco in room

What about the view from the lounge on the surrounding - spectacular
What about the lounge itself with it is real open fire during the evening.
And what is the most important part of the whole review - You can get this all for an affordable price.

Room was beautiful and clean, the bathroom was a bit dated but still nice and clean. After a cold spring hike the roaring fire and amazing sunset in the grand lobby was a real treat. Also enjoy a round of billiards.

Staff friendly and welcoming on arrival. Our two boys (2 and 4) enjoyed the pool in the basement - very quirky. Good games room for older children and the movie theatre is a nice touch for entertainment.
The restaurant menu is varied enough to find something good, service was friendly and they have agood children's menu.
Beds were good, rooms were warm and we were in the old part of the hotel.

Overall the room seem to be outdated and need repair. The bathtub was chipped, the bathroom floor was lined with plastic flooring. The chair was stained. I was surprised with the hotel room, because on the picture, it seems like a very nice, luxurious hotel. However; when I checked into the room, I was shocked. It was more of a motel than a hotel. Although I have to say the bathroom was clean. They did have game room and pool downstair. I am not quite sure I would use their pool though, it is kind of like the one you see in old russian movie, a old public swimming hole, made of pure cement, with green water. I am not sure if it is clean. I think it probably was a wonderful hotel at one time, could have been a wonderful hotel at one time, but the owner never kept up with the repair and just let it go.

Seriously not impressed with this hotel. Was assuming I had a nice room with lovely view etc. The premium room type was so basic (I even doubt if I was put in one).
Staff was basic as well, not bad but not enjoying it either. Was not feeling welcome, they could not care if you stay there.
I suggest to look for other hotels in the area as well, let this be your not value for money plan b

Would reccoment this hotel. Excellent service, stunning decore and incredible views. We were given a choice of rooms, which was much appreciated.
Travel tip:
Book in for dinner as it gets quite busy, we made a late booking at had a place for 9pm. This was ok for us.
