Polwaththa Eco Lodges is run by a family with strong ties with the village and the villagers themselves. True sustainable tourism is practiced here where Solar power is widely used, rain-water is harvested, almost all employees are selected from the village and all guests are encouraged to plant a tree before leaving. The lodges are clean and offer a magnificent view from the spacious balconies. The facilities exceed the expectation of an Eco lodge - there are tea/coffee-making facilities and hot/cold water in taps, all done in true eco-style while most lodges have a room telephone and a safety deposit box. The space between the lodges is large which provides ample privacy and freedom to the guests. The whole lodge is dressed in nature - green all round making it a haven for birds (60 species/15 endemics) and wild animals (barking deer, wild boar, porcupine, giant squirrel, flying squirrel and monkeys) along with the owner's dogs, cats and chickens for those who love pets. There are 7 Eco lodges, a dormitory and a camping site. Traditional cooking methods - the hearth and the clay pots are used to cook, which helps to call their rice & curry probably the best in Sri Lanka. A demonstration kitchen provides you the opportunity to cook yourself. The entire staff is friendly, eager to help and makes you feel at home. Being 700 meters above sea level and covered with trees, Polwaththa Eco Lodges can boast of a perfect climate, which leaves out the need for air-conditioning and instead offers a clean and fresh air. There is plenty of opportunities for cultural interaction with the community where the Village-walk & River-bath conducted by local villagers being the best. We had a good time! The best part about staying in the eco lodge is that it's nearby to a lot of places and fun filled activities especially if you love nature.

We arrived there in the middle of the night but was still met with wide friendly smiles and dinner was served immidiately which was very welcoming. Great rooms, great food and lovely and helpful staff where nothing you asked for was ever too much. Great value for money and a brilliant thing to experience with young children

Lovely, untouched spot for nature lovers

View, nature, ecological concept

It was very nice; the staff is especially friendly and helpful. The impact on the environment is minimised... it takes 45 minutes to get a hot shower - first the water must be heated by a wood fire. We had the most delicious eggplants ever... a pure dream! They also have plenty of board games in the dinning hut and even taught our sons how to play carom. Definitely worth it - not to mention the amazing view on the lake...

Wonderful people who take their hospitality seriously. We enjoyed the night there and wished we had more time to do the treks, which must be spectacular.
Gilbert B. Couples Canada, February 14, 2014
In perfect harmony

This isolated eco lodge was an amazing discovery: peace and quiet amidst bird songs and luxuriant nature.

A great two-day stay ! Cheerful and helpful staff. The food was possibly the best Sri Lankan food we had in our entire trip. We also enjoyed our guided trek in the nearby hill and village. We hiighly recommande this place.

Great fun.

Close to nature. Eco policy. Friendly staff.

We loved the local walk, a log fire heated our shower water, and the relaxed and peaceful feel of the whole place. If you arrive by taxi phone from the main road turn off to ensure you are collected by tuk tuk, our taxi couldn't make it up the steep hill but it all added to the fun!

I Highly Recommend Polwaththa Eco Lodges

My stay at Polwaththa Eco Lodges was a peak life experience. I highly recommend staying at the this family owned establishment. The mission of the owner is to bring business into rural areas of Sri Lanka in a sustainable manner, and being a local himself he has put his heart and soul into this endeavor. I found a staff that takes great pride in their country and way of life and an enthusiasm to share that with their guests. The cabins at the Eco Lodge are situated on a hillside in an amazingly beautiful jungle. It’s an experience just getting to them! The bird watching was incredible and I was immersed in the changing jungle sound days and night. The food was amazing, truly a treat. Most of the food is grown right on the property and my wonderful, attentive and knowledgeable guide pointed out the fruits, veggies, and spices on our village walk. Even the coffee I drank was grown, dried and roasted on the property! I was treated to a day/night in Mediwaka, the owner’s ancestral village. I learned how rice has been grown and harvested for over a thousand years, and got to see most of that process 1st hand as the village was bringing in their rice for season. I highly recommend you request a trip to this village, you will not be disappointed! I hope to go back someday and spend more time in this wonderful place, with these wonderful people.
