you could probably find better for the price

central location right next to train station, bed was comfortable, staff friendly but very limited english, a/c worked ok
being honest, this was not one of the best hotels we stayed in during our holiday. room was quite run down and shabby, although they seem to be renovating (they were renovating all the other rooms on our floor). there is no rooftop restaurant - it is being built on. although the local is quite central and useful if you have a train to catch, it is right on a very busy, noisy and dusty road (however with windows shut the room is not noisy). lots of mosquitoes in the lobby. overpriced for what you get, but then again so are most of the hotels in myanmar. ok for a short stay as long as you don't spend much time in your room, but if you look around a bit you could probably find some better value accommodation.

Grim but bearable

Only one, it's location next to Mandalay railway station
I picked this hotel for one reason only, I had to catch the 4.00 am train to Hsipaw and Popa Hotel is right next door to the railway station. The staff were friendly but the hotel is run-down and pretty grim although the rooms were clean and the beds fine to sleep in for the short time I was there. it is vastly over-priced . That said, it was bearable for the very short amount of time that i was there.

Dreadful. The hotel was built together with the railwaystation, dirtty, noisy sorrundings but close to the center.

Basic and old hotel at reasonable rate

Location, price, staffs
This was the cheapest hotel I found at the time of booking. This is an old hotel and the facilities are not up to modern standard. Staffs try their best to keep the hotel clean and as functioning as possible. The breakfast was somewhat limited but edible. The good thing is its central location (next to the train station and not far from the palace) and the staffs are very nice.

cheap friendly safe but shabby

clean room secure room friendly staff
I liked this hotel. If you are a traveller who wants to spend most of his time outside the hotel then this is perfect for you. Centrally located, cheap, safe, clean, and friendly, the rooms are perfectly adequate for a safe, good nights sleep. The comunual areas are shabby but honestly how long does anyone stay in a hotel corridor. The location and friendly helpful staff make this hotel. look beyond first impressions and you wiull be impressed.

Top Service from a true gentleman and his family.

I would have to say the three best things about our stay at the Popa Hotel, was the service the service and the service. Not to mention the fact that it is right beside the train station and shops.
I initially booked the Popa as a one-nighter, just to get me into Mandalay and then probably move to another or at least look around as I usually do. In the end, I stayed for a week. My girlfriend and I were made very welcome by the owner and his lovely wife, who were always asking if we would like some coffee and then bringing it to our room on a tray if we said yes. Although there was no mention of breakfast on the booking, the owner and his wife would bring coffee and a variety of tasty local food including steamed pork buns or fried veges in batter or curry puffs etc, every morning something different. I am aware that there was also a motive behind this, as I discussed with them because with a favorable reference would come future bookings. This being said, I have no doubt that they would treat everyone this way anyway. The Hotel itself is in need of some improvements in terms of some new carpet here and there etc. However, considering the overpriced accommodation in Burma generally speaking, the Popa was a great budget place to stay and the beds were really comfy , The other bonus was that the air conditioning works well and is really cold which is also great when you come in from outside and go ah! when you get into your room. I am not getting anything out of this review, but I did tell them that I will ask anyone who books to mention and you hope to get the same good service as he gave me. That way he is aware you have read this ( and in return will feel some need to provide a similar level of service to you), he agreed and said he will do this. Anyway good luck, my best estimation, is that you could do a lot worse than booking here, if all you are looking for is a roof and a comfy bed.

Not worth the money

Location, airconditioning, next to the railway station
Not worth the money. The room was acceptable, but pretty run down and with a few insects. The breakfast buffet was not very good and there were cats and dogs running around all over the rooftop "restaurant", sometimes begging for food. The staff was friendly but barely spoke any English at all and did not clean my room every day. The only good thing with the hotel was that it was located right next to the railway station.
