Built in 1879, this charming budget hotel stays true to its era with its quirky 1800s-style decoration. Situated in the heart of Surry Hills, Shakespeare Hotel occupies a great spot for nightlife, dining and trendy shopping, and is near such culturally-rich attractions as Belvoir St Theatre, Ray Hughes Gallery, and Brett Whiteley Studio. The city centre is just a mere kilometer away and the airport can be reached within 15 minutes. Shakespeare Hotel is famous for its good ol’ pub, a true Sydney classic often packed with locals coming to down its cold beer and pub meals. Patrons can sup in the main dining room, where its leather armchairs, oversized timber tables, and Victorian lamps give it character. Also with great character are the guestrooms themselves, adorned with vintage wardrobes, lamps, chairs, lush bedspreads, rich wallpaper, and classical-style paintings. The hotel does of course offer conveniences like air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and Internet access. odd question?

food and staff location
maintenance was very poor, taps leaking or falling off, light bulbs blowing constantly, milk was off by the self service coffee area. draws were dirty lights in room didn't work only one shower area.

Canadian retirees first Aussie visit

Pleasant staff, goos food, convenient location
Location near Central and buses suited us, and the friendly staff were very helpful. However,if a facility is a hostel, don't call it a hotel. Our four day stay saw no bed-making, garbage service, nor any cleaning. Not quite what we expected, but because of convenience, we have booked another stay prior to departure.

Central and easy to get around Sydney CBD

Comfortable bed. Central to city and Surry hills. Meals other than breakfast available at reasonable price.
Comfortable stay at my own pace. I stayed 5 days, room not serviced, think most are short stays. Close to other restaurants, shops, Central station and walking( it does take a bit of time) to CBD. The rooms are on the 2nd floor and above the hotel and restaurant so be prepared to hear some noise till it closes about 11pm and people outside smoking as non-smoking inside. No lift so be easy on the luggage weight as you are the one that is going to carry it up 2 flights of stairs. Over all a good experience back in time as the rooms are themed.

Perfect. Warm. Fun. Loads of personality.

Between, the great room, the excellent bar downstairs, the amazing pub food on offer, the price and it's location: close to everything you need in Sydney. It can't be beat.
Perfect. Loved every second. Would come back in a heartbeat.

Superb City Hotel

Great Staff, Beer and Food, Excelent Room
This City Hotel is located near to Central Railway Station giving access to Sydney's entire metropolitan area. The staff are friendly and helpful with a personal touch. It has very good food and beer. The rooms are comfortable and well equipped. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend The Shakespeare Hotel to travelers.
