The Hotel Castelar, centrally located in Buenos'Aires Micro Center, is the perfect base for seeing the city. Complete with old world charm and decor, comfortable rooms with modern equipment, excellent service and a great buffet breakfast--all at an affordable price. Also centrally located for reaching Buenos Aires international and domestic airports. A choice pick by all standards!
The hotel is a taste of old world charm with all the modern conveniences and centrally located in downtown Buenos Aires.
The spa could be embellished to include more than a sauna.
- Restaurant Tip : A wwonderful tapas cafe and bar is just next door to the hotel. REasonable prices and great food!

Please see the review I just wrote for my stay on the 15th of October. I flew in to Buenos Aires on the 15th, and stayed at the Castelar for one night because I couldn't make my connection to Salta on the same day. I checked in around noon time and gave them my Agoda voucher. Check in was simple and quick. My room was ready on arrival. I checked out the next morning (also very quick) to fly on to Salta for a few nights. I left one bag behind in the hotel for my return to Buenos Aires and the Castelar a few days later, when my visit to B.A. would really begin. When I returned to the Castelar for this second stay of 5 nights, again, check in was simple and fast. Foe me, the hotel is really only used as a place to sleep at night because I am usually up and out quite early, so I am not in need of some amenities some other travelers might want/expect. The rooms are quite basic. Clean with no frills. there is a small fridge, no microwave, no in room wi-fi, very few non-spanish speaking TV options...no Luxury, no fitness center. The breakfast is the same every day, but I usually had leftovers from dinner the night before (as the restaurants tend to give huge portions of food,) so I would bring my leftovers down to breakfast and make my breakfast a little more enjoyable.
The location is excellent.
the hotel now has free wi-fi in the lobby and spa areas.
the breakfast is mediocre.
- Restaurant Tip : Eat at the Plaza Asturias across the street on the corner! The best. A favorite of the locals...cash only, no Euros or dollars or credit cards...very large portions!..and usually very busy until one or two am!
Castelar Hotel has it's positives and negatives

I stayed at the Casteler Hotel and Spa for a total of six night on this trip to Buenos Aires. I had stayed at this hotel once before in 2006.
The main reason I decided to return to this hotel a second time was for the location. It is very ideally located on Ave. de Mayo just 1/2 a block from Ave. de Julio, which puts the hotel just about midway between the Congresso Nacional at one end and Casa Rosada at the other. (both must sees for the usual tourist.) I also found I could easily walk from this location to Puerto Madiero, San Telmo, to Calle Florida for shopping, and a little further, but doable, to Recoleta. The only time I found myself taking the metro was to visit the Palermo area...and there is a metro stop a few doors away from the hotel.
The Castelar is also convenient to what has become my favorite restaurant in B.A., the Plaza Asturias, which is across the street on the far corner of the block.
I did find it necessary to book some spa treatments, like massage, ahead of time, as they were often fully booked if I tried to get a last minute appointment. (unlike Thailand!)
I was pleased to find that the hotel now offers free wi-fi in both the lobby and spa areas. When I stayed here 2 years ago there was only one computer available for hotel guests and there were always people waiting to use it. The wi-fi does not work from the room. I found myself (as a solo traveler) bringing my laptop down to breakfast with me, and getting some work done while eating a light breakfast. Also, the hotel restaurant (food is pretty good) and bar are open pretty late, so I also found myself going down to sit in the comfortable lounge at the end of the day, to go on-line...(and I was not the only one!)
The biggest negative is that the rooms are nothing special, they are adequate if all you plan to do is sleep in them. The cable TV does not have many non-spanish speaking options. The rooms are rather sparsely furnished, with no microwave, but a small working fridge. The
I love the location. It's right in the middle of the city at the intersection of Ave. De mayo and Julio, walking distance to the obelisk. The lobby is beautiful and the spa offers excellent services for a reasonable price. As a guest of the hotel, one can use the sauna, steam, etc. for no extra fee. The staff were cordial and helpful. There is free wi-fi available in the lobby and spa areas. (new since my last stay here.)
The hotel is rather old and is slowly being upgraded - or so they say. The only electrical outlet I could find to charge my computer was in the bathroom. The breakfast was nothing to look forward to...the same food every morning.
- Restaurant Tip : Try the Plaza Asturias across the street on the corner! The best! Another good restaurant about a block away is the Museo de Jamon.
Just good

We stayed in one of the refurbished rooms which was both comfortable and well equipped. The breakfast was OK but not great. The hotel itself has plenty of character, being an old building.
The staff at the front desk were very unhelpful - they did not help us carry the bags to the room when we checked in, despite walking us to it with the key! They would also not assist with calling a restaurant to try and make a booking (our Spanish is not great).

Quality of breakfast declined during Easter compared with earlier in the week.
We got good tickets for soccer games through reception just hours after our arrival. Soccer in Argentina is probably a pleasure even for those not particularly interested in the sport.
- Sightseeing/Attractions Tip : Cafe Tortoni in the same street (two blocks away) is a wonderful place to visit, I would say a must for a visitor to BA. Go there for breakfast or light lunch.
