This luxurious hotel directly on the waterfront at Barra da Tijuca beach offers fantastic ocean views, outstanding leisure options and high end service. The Sheraton Barra Hotel in Rio de Janeiro is located in the safe and modern area of Barra, only a few kilometers from the city center. The hotel also offers a free shuttle bus to the famous Barra shopping mall six kilometers away. The hotel has very large, elegantly furnished rooms with generous bathrooms, all with balconies and scenic views over the beach, satellite TV and wireless internet access. The Terral restaurant serves excellent Mediterranean and Thai fusion cuisine and the two swimming pools and Jacuzzis are set in landscaped gardens. The hotel also has a gym, sauna and squash courts.
Children and extra beds:Extra beds are dependent on the room you choose, please check the individual room policy for more details.

Nice location on quieter beach
Close to Barra Tijuca; a quieter beach but required a lot of travel to get to other tourist areas.
7.7
Barra da Tijuca has it all: beautiful beaches, amazing shopping options, and on week days less crowded than the other regions. But be aware: avoid rush hours, the transit is chaotic! To get to other spots taxi or bus are needed and with the traffic can take a lot of time. I found the overall hustle of the city more than expected, which reduced the relaxation factor.
Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon are beautiful parts of Rio but a little too crowded - while we did visit and enjoy them, we underestimated the travel time to get to the sites from Barra which was disappointing. It didn't help that the front desk was not more knowledgable about the time required for more popular commutes.
On the beach close to Marker "4" there is an Itaipava Stand - the proprietor on the right side is amazing for service and serves an "X-TuDo" sandwich that is truly amazing: like and egg breakfast sandwich and hamburger all in one.
Hotel Feature Tip:
I was surprised for such an international tourist destination that English is not more well known. The front desk and concierge spoke well, but the other staff not so much - this presented challenges with room service and housekeeping on occasion as my portuguese was not so good.
Perhaps it is a cultural thing, but most staff seemed to avoid eye contact and acknowledging me - It seemed like I was invisible on occasion, which was strange for a hotel of this calibre and price point.
I like to grab a coffee first thing in the morning without having to sit down in a restaurant or bother with room service - it was odd not to have a coffee station where I could self serve - especially staying in a suite on the top floor. There was a "make it yourself" option of course, but there is no fresh milk with that.
Generally the concierge was helpful, but usually underestimated time required to get to some other tourist spots - this was frustrating as well. Some of the shuttle services advertised are actually milk runs that hit a number of hotels - its usually faster and pretty cheap to take a taxi instead.
There seemed to be lack of clarity among staff on services provided by the hotel for some basic things - when I tried to send a postcard, and was trying to understand how long it might take, I got messages ranging from: the postman comes daily, weekly, or when we call him.
