Somewhat of a surprise......

Very friendly, obliging and helpful staff
The Sydney Hotel is not named after the city of Sydney in Australia but after the son of the owner who is named Sydney. It is an old hotel that in its heyday would have been fantastic. The past is everywhere in this hotel, the once elegant dining room, the special rooftop grill, the spiral staircase, the long corridors, the well appointed balconies etc. The hotel is OK, well organised and the staff are very friendly. The room was clean, the TV needed tuning (no cable here) and the shower got hot after 10 mins!!! But as a budget hotel it was satisfactory. I felt that the hotel was genuine in looking after the needs of its patrons.
Travel tip: General Santos is a nice town and the Hotel Sydney is opposite Heneral Santos Park which is a beautiful park. There are plenty of tricycles in Gensan to get around which are cheap. The town is quiet (few jeepneys in this town), orderly compared with Manila and Davao and it is clean. There was no evidence of trouble or strife. Not many tourists visit because of its past. A new SM Mall opened in September 2012 and it is one of the best I have visited. Well organised, bright, airy and the shops, especially the cafes, are great. Worth a visit.

Great Service But Needs Better Up-Keep

Great location, spacious rooms and very friendly service!
The rooms seemed old but effort has been made to keep it clean and neat. Only thing is, there were roaches in the bathroom which housekeeping readily removed. The lobby, during a meeting with two guests, had mosquitos flying around; and the 1 flying roach that had to land on the shirt of one of my guests. Holes on the seats of the dining area should be repaired.

Good Location

Staff friendly and helpful
If I had any questions or wanted a coffee or a taxi the staff were always there to assist me. The roof top grill was very nice and affordable and has live guitarist. The only issue was that there was no hot water, even after maintenance checked it.
Restaurant Tip: If you don't want to go out at night you can go to the roof top grill for food and drink.

Well located in General Santos

The location was very handy and central to most points of interest.
The staff were friendly and very helpful. Indeed the staff went to extreme lengths for me. There were some some cockroaches which got into my things.
Sightseeing/Attractions Tip: General Santos is a small city but placed in a lovely location. I felt safe at all times and the population was friendly and helpful.
