Awesome stay but can be better ;)

Great location, nice feel overall - Villa type with nice design, combination of burmese and modern style. Pool area and dining area have a nice ambience - great for couples. Very helpful and friendly staff. Only thing which annoys us here is that there is a counter staff who is asking us to pay for each phone call that she makes for us. We hope the management can change that crazy idea of asking guests to pay for a freaking phone call - Hotel is already expensive so that's a bit crazy. We will be back and will refer them to friends if they change their policy towards assisting a guest for a few seconds of phone calls.

An excellent place to stay

Location (just outside the old city), ambiance, gardens
8.3
A good place to stay, close to many of the attractions of the old city, and convenient for everything else. The hotel reception will happily arrange personalised half and whole day tours for you. Some of the staff can seem a slightly diffident at times (but we put this down to shyness and the desire not to get things wrong). Don't be put off. This is a lovely place to stay.

I stayed here for two night, but WISH I had stayed at least another 3! The Hotel is outstanding. Located in the heart of Bagan, among thousands of incredible Temples and Pagodas. Im an avid traveller and the Tharabar Gate hotel is one of the best Ive ever stayed at. The food is exceptional, the staff are second to none and the rooms are clean, spacious and comfortable. Cant recommend this place enough.

Quiet & peaceful place to enjoy some personal time

Peaceful ambience, hospitable staff and the location
7.3
My wife & I chose to celebrate our 1st wedding anniversary at this hotel and we enjoyed our peaceful, quality time here. The location is great since its near many of the major Pagodas and it ain't too far from the Hot Air Balloon launchpads. The folks at the hotel are hospitable and kind and that made the stay very relaxed. Although I must admit that for a 4 start hotel, their internet connectivity and TV channel options were below par and their spa could have been better. But otherwise a very nice place to stay in Bagan!

pleasant stay in a beautiful hotel

beautiful hotel
9.3
We had very pleasant three nights at the hotel. The hotel is very nice, although one can notice some tiny details that shows the aging if the hotel or the effect of hard weather conditions, but they are negligible compared to the overall beauty. The only negative experience was that the staff told us to rent the electric scooters from them because it is the same price as outside the hotel. It turned out that this information was very far from reality.

Great Stay in Bagan

Location, Staff, and Grounds

Overall everything was great. The only reason I did not rate the hotel higher is it needs a face lift in the bathrooms. Everything was kept very clean and well attended but the finishes and marble was worn in that area. Also, another person traveling with us had an issue with the plumbing in their bathroom but it was taken care of immediately. Staff was exceptional and very friendly. Beds were very comfortable and the AC kept the room very cold if you preferred. The grounds are beautiful and the location could not be better when visiting the area.

charming Boutique hotel in the heart of old bagan

Wonderful. The staff greated us promptly with a delicious cold lemongrass drink and cold towel in there lovely lobby area while they efficiently checked us in and took care of our baggage and escorted us to our room and toured the grounds. Very cordial staff. Their English is decent for basic communication. The room was nice good air conditioning, lay out, quiet, private. The Myanmar massage and reflexology was great at their spa. The pool ground was nice, pretty architecture and lay out, not too crowded during the hot days in bagan though some of the guests had young children that were a bit loud, crying and throwing tantrums with parents that didn't console them or ameliorate the problem. In addition, some guests brought some of their own loud obnoxious music that was blasting on the common pool ground area which was uncourteous and ruined the ambiance for other guests. It would have been nice if the staff had them turn it off.one other nuisance were guests smoking on the pool ground. This is not enjoyable. I would like to see them have a no smoking policy on the pool ground area as it is not fair for other guests to breath second hand smoke when laying out at the poolside trying to enjoy their vacation. There should be a designated area for smoking. Overall if we were to go back to bagan we would stay there again. The location can't be beat. Very close to walking to some good local restaurants ( the moon) and easy to explore the ancient pagodas, stupas and temples as it is next door to the electric moped shop which we rented for two days with our guide wagi ( best guide ever! The movie star if bagan. Everyone there knows him!!!) to drive around and get places that cars can't get to or that would be bumpy, uncomfortable and difficult to get to. Overall tharabar gate was a great little escape for us in the old city of bagan. It keep a nice authentic feel of being away from it all. It was not crowded with large tour groups which some of the other hotels are

Interesting bungalow type accommodation

Location, Bungalow style accomodation

The hotel on entering has a great feel to it being right next to the old gate to the old city. It was rainy season when we went so going back and forth to the bungalows even with umbrellas meant getting a bit wet. The hotel fits nicely with the surroundings. Bungalow rooms are a bit old and the shower water pressure wasn't great. The room had a sofa which we used as a bed for one of the kids so that saved us having to get an extra bed. Food was ok, although one or two dishes were done brilliantly and presented beautifully (I think the Bagan Curry set was the main highlight). Plenty of horse carts available outside so touring was easy. Some staff were very nice and friendly, but others (reception) were a bit too kurt and seemed to just want you to spend more money. Still it is I felt one of the best places to stay in Bagan bearing in mind that there aren't many other hotels to this standard that are near the old city.
