Tokyo Bay / Odaiba

A large artificial island in Tokyo, Odaiba is home to several shopping and entertainment centers, theme parks, museums and features some spectacularly futuristic architecture.

During the 1980s, development of Odaiba into a futuristic business district was started, but came to a halt in the early 1990s. It wasn’t until recently that Odaiba became the highly popular space-age shopping and entertainment district that it is today, with further development underway. Today, Odaiba is linked to Tokyo by many bridges and tunnels, but most visitors arrive via the automated Yurikamome: a cross between a train and a bus. An attraction in itself, the driverless elevated trains cross the Rainbow Bridge with a 270-degree loop for stunning views of Tokyo Bay. Located by the bridge, Odaiba Kaihin Park includes a man-made sand beach.

Most of Odaiba's many attractions are connected with each other by pleasant, broad pedestrian walks and parks. The Fuji TV Building is the headquarters of one of Japan's nationwide TV stations. Inside, visitors can see some exhibitions on popular programs and access the futuristic building's observatory deck. Shaped like a full-sized ocean liner, the Museum of Maritime Science is a six-story museum devoted to ships. Oedo Onsen Monogatari is a hot spring theme park, which reproduces the atmosphere of the Edo Period.

Visitors can enjoy various types of baths, which are fed by hot springs. The Palette Town shopping and entertainment complex consists of Venus Fort, Sun Walk, Mega Web, a Ferris Wheel and Zepp Tokyo; a large concert venue. Also known as Tokyo International Exhibition Center, Tokyo Big Sight is Japan's largest exhibition and convention center and one of the bay islands' boldest architectural creations.
